(lightweight) Here’s the actual car, below:
I was thinking, what’s this worth, like $50k? Holy Wienerschnitzel $128k!? It turns out, yes. One recently (February)
failed to meet reserve
on BaT for $154k. Mind you, it had only 100 miles on the odometer (I might rather have the one I linked above with 13k because at least it’s been driven periodically). In the comments, it seems like that’s the going price for these things, holy hell I had no idea any E36 could command that kind of price.

The major changes to the car were to lower the weight for racing. The cars came without a radio ( although the speakers were installed and the car pre-wired for the radio), air conditioning, leather seats, tool kit, or a sun roof. The doors have aluminum skins. There is no underbonnet insulation blanket and the trunk only has carpet on the floor. The under body insulation is thinner and there is special carpeting to lower weight. Overall the changes added up to 200 lb (91 kg) less than a standard M3.
So let me get this straight. They didn’t just delete things, but they put in special carpet, aluminum door skins, etc etc but they
installed heavy speakers without the head unit to power them?
Considering I was installing speakers in cars literally before I was old enough to drive, it’s something they could have EASILY put in later, no? And saved another 5-10 pounds? Speakers are heavy! But what do I know? I didn’t build the car, nor can I afford one. So I’ll just sit here and rant instead, I guess.
Anyway, these cars must now all be exclusively in the realm of wealthy collectors who will never drive them; one could strip out a normal E36 M3 and get nearly the same driving experience for 1/10th the money. It’s sad, really. My initial reaction to cars like this is just to shake my head. Think of what else you could have for that kind of money! I’d rather have the Alpina E30 I saw a few weeks ago (which by the way is still at that shop, sitting out in the snow as we speak) - at least that car is worth “only” ~$35k; I’d have $95k leftover! Still, it’s sweet. I have to admit that.
I’m gonna go rob a bank or something. Or just go buy the mint-looking Dinan supercharged

A guy who hung out at the proto-Cars & Coffee that I hung out at in 2001 had one of these. There were cars and coffee but it was an almost-nightly thing at a suburban Maryland Barnes & Noble parking lot where people rolled up in cool cars and motorcycles but eventually the cops started showing up because the motorcycles were doing too many stunts.
I want to say he eventually replaced the M3 with a Saleen fox body Mustang with a full cage in it. Or maybe he replaced the Mustang with the M3. I can’t remember.

A few years ago, a local enthusiast dealer (small inventory, very desirable cars like a 430 scud, FD RX7, new Vanquish, etc.) had a track prepped LTW with a cage and lots of miles on it.. the asking price was crazy cheap, but back then I thought anything over $20k was too much for an e36.

Ive seen several that are raced regularly. Theyre cool, but lordy the amount of regular M3s you could make lightweight for that price?

Right, that’s what I’m thinking. You could have an E36 M3 AND and E46 M3 AND an E9x M3 for that price, with money leftover for maintenance. WTF
