Kinja'd!!!

Just about finished with Erik Larson’s  Dead Wake , an account of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by the German submarine U-20 in May of 1915. Highly recommend if you like maritime history.

Just be sure you have a dictionary handy. Larson has a massive vocabulary and likes to use it.

Weird fact about me

The Lusitania was sunk on the same day as I was born. Not the same year obviously. And Germany surrendered on the same day as my birthday. Again not the same year

I’m about 70 pages in, it’s a very cool book.

You would probably enjoy Shadow Divers . I just read it for the second time about a month ago. The diving is crazy to read about, and the amount of research the divers did to identify it is impressive to read about.

To make an automotive connection - Charles T. Jeffery, chairman of the Thomas B. Jeffery Company (the original makers of Rambler), and son of its founder, was a passenger on Lusitania and survived the sinking. Afterward, he reevaluated his priorities and decided to dedicate the rest of his life to his family and philanthropy, and sold the company to Charles Nash, who renamed it after himself.

That may have been mentioned in the book. There were a ton of accounts of the individual passengers.

About halfway through this and I’m loving it. I knew about Chatterton and Kohler from watching Deep Sea Detectives on the History Channel, but somehow I’d never heard of this.

Awesome! It is a fascinating read. I’ve got my open water diving certification, but can’t even fathom penetrating a wreck. I’ll stick to warm water and shallow enough that I don’t need to worry about anything more than a courtesy stop on the way up.

Yeah, I’ve never tried any sort of diving and reading this doesn’t make me want to run out a try it. I’ve watched a few videos of Chatterton’s where he narrates footage he took on U-869 and the Andrea Doria and I can’t believe how he could navigate around in those spaces.
