was it good? the specs aren’t bad, front engine, rear wheel drive, turbo engines, manual transmissions.

If it was released today people would go crazy over it!

The Spirit R/T (and all the AA cars) were front wheel drive.

The engine was great from what I read, but the rest of the car wasn’t quite up to par (having been in a few Acclaims, I completely understand). The contemporary SHO was a better overall package.

It also had a reputation for throwing timing belts...

Oh shit! I got confused with the single A plataform

Apparently the double A platform was just a stretched K-body!

Well, keep in mind 1991 was just coming off of the malaise era, so it felt like the fastest car in the world to me. It was part of the trio of new domestic performance cars which all hit the market about the same time; the Spirit R/T, Taurus SHO, and Lumina Z34.

that said, the Spirit was still a K-car at its roots. It handled “ok” and the shifter was rather rubbery. Plus the 2.2 Turbo III ate head gaskets for dinner and snacked on timing belts between meals. Unfortunately the Lotus-designed valvetrain caused the timing belt to “tow rope,” and the 2.2 block didn’t have a provision for a second idler so they had to crank up the belt tension to compensate. End result was that the Turbo III is the only engine I’ve personally encountered which always ( always ) snapped timing belts clean. Most other engines I’ve seen, the timing belt fails because the crank sprocket shears off a bunch of teeth when you try to start the engine.

every FWD car Chrysler had (which wasn’t an imported Mitsu) up until the LH, PL, and JA was a K-derivative. Just stretched or shrunk a bit as needed.

Apparently Mexico got a number of different EEKs not offered in Canada or the U.S. - different tunes of turbo engines, different equipment, availability in Mexico after discontinuation in Canada/U.S., etc.
