My uncle, when faced with such a dilemma, would find the biggest screwdriver in the box and skewer the filter. Sure, oil got everywhere, but with the improvised filter handle, there was plenty of leverage.

I have one of these kinds. adequete. better then the fabric, and due to the 90deg handle able to get in tighter spots then the rubber strap kind.
