Wheel Painting Question

I have a set of cheap winter wheels (they’re the nearly-ubiquitous “sport editions” and I need to re-paint them. The finish is peeling, and I ground off all the bubbles and chips I could see. I’m not going for a concours-level finish here, these are winter wheels on a 14 year old car.

I’ve done this a few times before, though, and every time I feel like I spend an hour masking off the tires. Is there a better way? I thought about bending some old thin plastic cutting boards (these have infinite uses, by the way) but it seems ripe for one falling off just as you shoot a bit of paint over the wheel, and I’ll end up with a big paint spot on my tire.

I’m not really willing to have the tires taken off, although that would obviously solve the problem - it would defeat the whole purpose of having separate winter wheels, no?

Here’s what they looked like after a more recent coat of paint:

I’m about to go at it with 1,000,000 tiny strips of masking tape again, unless Oppo has any brilliant solutions.

Are you putting new tires on them?

Index cards. Let me see if I can find a picture from when I painted my winter wheels...

Use a deck of cards. Just slide them in and make sure they overlap each other.

A deck of cards and a piece of hose.

Wait!! Can you test something for me? At least on one wheel? Try applying tire shine before painting, then see if the overspray on the rubber will just wash off (after the rim is dry of course).

I’ve seen people use chapstick on valvecover lettering when painting them. Afterwards they just wipe of the letters with a towel. Sometimes they will paint the letters one color, let it dry, use the chapstick, and then paint the rest of fhe valvecover another color. That way it looks more professional than applying paint to the letters with a brush.

Nice wagon! I’m a sucker for blue wagons, more so it it’s a 3-series!

Wax, vaseline or any other substance that leaves a washable film should be doable, but i haven’t tried it either. I know dad painted his steelies black with tyre and overspray included. The painted tyrewall was black, but eventually started cracking due to the flexing.

Hmm well I haven’t done it yet. First step is to get tire shine. I could try it on the back side first I suppose... even small projects like this take me a week sometimes.

This is a great idea, a few others have said this or index cards. I think I’ll see how much index cards are at the local drug store, or check out the thrift store next door for a couple of cheap decks of cards.

Index cards have the advantage of being a bit taller, in case there is overspray - I’m not using black paint. Or wait, maybe I should go with black for a change... hmmmm

Thanks! I love it, and would keep it forever if I could. It’s a 5-speed, awd.
