Kinja'd!!!

I prefer the Millie on the left because she looks much more like a girl you’d see in real life.

I thought she was a boy in the first couple episodes.

Middle schoolers these days....

The ironic thing is she does look like middle schoolers used to look in the show.

Yes, and I have all sorts of conflicted feminist reactions to this photo. I saw it on Twitter a few days ago and it makes me really uncomfortable for several reasons.

This is one of those times where I desperately want to know how much of a choice this was for the actress. If this is how she wants to dress, great. If she was essentially compelled into it by stylists/publicists/the like, then I’ve got serious issues with it. And that really only scratches the surface of my feelings, because I’m made incredibly uncomfortable by the idea that even if the red carpet look was her choice, it reflects her response the “adultisation for sexualisation” of a 13 year old girl in the media. It’s all kind of terrible no matter which way it goes...

If an adult is sexualizing the appearance of a thirteen year-old, that’s the adult’s issue, not the teen’s. As far as whether or not the look is her choice, one can assume that major media personalities are pressured ino wearing whatever will sell their boss’s goods.

Certainly possible, yes. This is why I am not making a real judgement call either way. We don’t have the facts.

Of course, but if publicists/stylists/etc are intentionally trading on the idea that some adults may do so, clearly I find that pretty awful.

Kinja'd!!! "DipodomysDeserti" (dipodomysdeserti)
11/15/2017 at 19:24, STARS: 0

Of course publicists/stylists ect are trading on the idea that women (no matter what age) are objectified. While they’re just as shitty, they’re a symptom of our society, not the cause. Attack the cause of the ill. A middle school teacher (the OP), or really any adult, thinking it is even remotely acceptable to hold an opinion about the physical appearance of a thirteen year-old is much closer to the root of the issue than whether or not someone told her to cut her hair a certain way.

I’m not ragging on you, just pointing out something I noticed.

Kinja'd!!! "Kat Callahan" (kyosuke)
11/15/2017 at 19:47, STARS: 0

Well, I happen to be a JHS teacher too, and it’s not about the physical appearance of the thirteen year old at all here. It’s an opinion on the set of social factors (we seem in agreement) that would lead to decision making about appearance that feeds into these social factors. If you think my criticism is at all directed at the thirteen year old in question, you’ve missed my point.

11/15/2017 at 20:04, STARS: 1

No, I didn’t think you were critiquing the teen. Sorry if that seemed unclear. I was more commenting that the root issue is that adults (the OP in this case) would find it acceptable to comment on the appearance of a girl (or anyone, really). I think we are in agreement.

A comment like yours is what I was hoping for when I posted the picture. Thank you. I hope you will say more about how the photo makes you feel.

Mrs. O.C. and I have raised three girls and we’ll be marrying one or two of them off this summer. I personally have never been more taken in by a character on screen than I was by Eleven on “Stranger Things.” Her “girlness” was never in even the least question to me and in particular, I appreciated how she really wasn’t feminized in that role. My take was that she was allowed to be a child. Granted this view is through my straight White Anglo-Saxon Christian liberal middle class lenses...

I think a worthy layer of discussion around your point is that this child has accepted a very grown-up employment... I’m not making an argument here, only pointing out a layer of the onion.

Boy, does that come across to me as gender stereotyping. I mean, who gets to decide what “boy” looks like or what “girl” looks like? We’ve raised three young women and Eleven was never anything but all girl to me when I watched both seasons of “Stranger Things.”

Stranger Things owes a lot to It, Super 8, and maybe a dozen movies I can’t even name. A lot of podcasters/reviewers got all pissy because they said it was derivative, but for me it was OK mostly because it hit those notes. And those kids really carry it - Winona wasn’t a good casting choice, but she didn’t ruin it.

Owes a lot to E.T. as well. We watched 3 hours worth last night - ha! Should be through with Season 2 this weekend.

Winona is so ridiculous in some scenes... Somehow worse this season, but I guess it’s easy to over the line of believable distraught mother to completely insane overactor.
