No, not Detroit. I’m gonna be spending 5-6 days in LA this spring, and while my budget it not unlimited, my schedule is. I’ve been to basically every state east of Wyoming, but never west of there, and California has been on my bucket list for a long time. I’m finally going this spring, and need to explore LA, particularly the car scene. First of all, I’m wondering what y’all can tell me about Turo. We’ll be flying into LAX late at night and out early in the morning, and have a budget of about $325 max to rent a car. Needs to be able to take two people, and two big suitcases from the airport to the apartment where we’re staying. I’m leaning towards some fun convertible from Turo like a 3-Series vert or 124 Spider, but I know very little about the service, so any insight you can give on that would be helpful.

Beyond that, I know I want to hit up the Petersen museum and do lots and lots of car spotting. Obviously Beverly Hills is the place to see Lamborghinis with dealer tags running around, but I want to know where to go to see older, more unusual stuff. So give me your suggestions for car-related attractions, car spotting hotspots, or really anything you think would be good for me to know (yes, I know LA traffic is the worst). Also, suggest driving roads. Pacific Coast Highway? Mulholland Drive? Where should I look?

Go to Palos Verdes on the weekend.

Browse Facebook and Instagram for upcoming events. That’s how I keep abreast of what’s going on.

Take the Angeles Crest Hwy up into Mt. Chilao. Matt Farah films his One Take videos in the area and you’ll see some interesting machinery on the weekends. Please take care, especially when you’re going through the tunnel on your way down. Some dude stuffed an S2000 into a stone wall when I was at the top a few weeks ago.

Re: Turo

E: it looks like this info is incorrect! Disregard.

You have to provide a driving history report for the past 5 (I think) years. If you’ve lived in multiple states in that time, be aware that you’ll have to give the driving history for each state. I asked about it once and my state said it would take 6-8 weeks to get the paperwork and cost $10.

Palos Verdes Cars and coffee is the first Saturday of the month. I would highly recommend it for the amount of variety. Tons of classics through modern exotics.

Make sure you go to the Peterson museum. Awesome place, and the garage tour is worth the extra money just to see all the cool cars they have down there that they either don’t show or are rotated out. Also, drive PCH.

Good suggestions all below. Petersen Museum is a must. I can give you a google map with a good rough for driving up the PCH a little and then up and over through Malibu with some of Mulholland Highway and back into LA area.

Read up on these before you go:

Angeles Crest/Hwy 2

Mulholland Dr AND Mulholland Hwy west then either Kanan Dume or Latigo Canyon down to Malibu, then PCH back into Santa Monica

To the south in Orange County is Hwy 74

Petersen is obviously a must (book the vault tour before you go)

In Burbank Autobooks Aerobooks is a great bookshop with videos and other memorabilia, they have a C&C I believe

I have not been to any of the following:

If you like drag racing there is the NHRA museum in Pomona

Nethercutt Museum

Marconi Museum

This site is a good reference I used when I went in May w/ my dad

The Petersen Museum is in Museum Row on the west end of the Miracle Mile section of Wilshire. This area is quite famous and not far from a number of central-LA landmarks. When you’re there, consider visiting LACMA and the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits (interesting not just because it’s a collection of preserved extinct animals, but also because it’s one of the last spots in the area (aside from the oil derricks) where you can see the oil & tar that was everywhere under the Los Angeles area and fueled the early car culture that developed there).

The mountains north of the city are just filled with the most amazing driving roads anywhere. The hills/mountains and desert east of the city also have amazing driving roads.

One that I hadn’t seen mentioned here is the Automobile Driving Museum , which offers demos/rides in vehicles from their collection on Sundays, and seems to be an all-around rad place to visit (I’ve never been to California either).

Stay off of Mulholland during rush hour.
If you go up PCH, and you should for a bit, stop at the Malibu Country Mart. Always something cool parked there. You may see Spike Feresten or Jerry Seinfeld, depending on when you come in. Sunset Blvd through BH has some good spotting last time I was there.

Here ya go, will take a couple hours probably I’d budget 2 or 3:

Also if you have time you should drive up Angeles Crest but that’s another 2-3 and possible more hours time commitment. Enjoy!

Awesome! I love that spot. I shot a CHP Charger there a few months back. Epic sunset spot. I think I might have shot the Civic Type-R there too.
