Wouldn’t surprise me, sounds like mechanical interference.

I think if the timing belt broke, it would sound like silence.

Ya, that sounds like piston and valve having a nice firm hand shake and saying “nice to meet you”

Pull back the timing cover and see what it looks like. The heads are probably toast though.

I figured the engine would still crank, but the pistons would be slamming the valve train, since it is not moving.

yep, slipped or broken belt. The uneven cranking is from the cylinder with valves still open (no compression.)

I think $1 might be too much..

Sure seems like it. Is the EJ255 an interference engine?

Can’t you take the cam gear cover off of these pretty easily and do a visual check?

Yes, it’s right on the front and a very easy thing to do. This person seems pretty clueless.

I’ll offer $0.50. Oppo group buy.

The internet says they are non interference, so maybe the belt jumped or broke?

From the ad

Had an issue about a month ago when I was heading to work and it started running rough. Turned the car off and car wouldn’t crank.

If it slipped how would it run and then not crank? Slip more when car is off? If it broke the car wouldn’t run rough, it would shut off immediately, right?

The running rough prior to being shut off is throwing me.

Given the way I’ve seen most timing belts fail, I’d wager it slipped/jumped a tooth while it was running, then when he tried to start it again the belt sprocket on the crankshaft just ripped off the teeth it was engaged with.

If the car has a CEL, codes can be pulled using built-in diagnostics tool. Might find some other issues that led to its untimely demise.

You can see by the ad the the seller has not done a damn thing to figure it out. Seems dumb to me to buy another car when all this one may need is a new timing belt.

Ah, the ad got kinja’d when I first clicked. Hopefully it has some rally-wagon in its future.

Tensioner might have broken, allowing the crank to still spin the cams via the belt, but it sounds like its out of time at the least, or has bent valves at the most

Every Subaru engine since about 1996 has been an interference engine, so no matter what happens it won’t be “just a timing belt”.

I have known a handful of Subarus to lose a timing belt and somehow escape other damage.

If the belt broke the engine would spin way faster because it would have zero compression. It sounds like something broken in the crankcase though

Standard all used Subarus need at least $4,000 in repairs comment applies
