People are cutting cords left and right. However no one solution provides what I want all in one place. Simple really. News, movies and few shows on Discovery and History channel.

So things like FOX, CNN, BBC; AMC, HBO, SHOWTIME; Discovery and History channels.

That is pretty much all I will ever want. Wife wants Hockey channel in there too.

No one solution offers those things. Say I picked some channels from Amazon Channels and some things from Netflix, I am still short News and Hockey.

Say an aggregator comes along and says we will combine your hulu, roku, amazon prime and netflix all into one... well, we’ll just be back to current TV channel bundle for much high higher price...

I think Amazon needs to work a little more on its channel availability. I can then cut the TV cable...

to get everything you had before so true, plus you add the price of highspeed internet into that.

At least buy a no-contract over-the-top service like Vue or Sling

Sling TV is pretty damn closed to what you want but not expensive.

The thing that really pisses me off is that sports networks, at least for hockey, still broadcast in 720p30. I want 1080p60 at least god dammit. You can get that through NHL but then you have to set up a VPN to watch your local team and you don’t get to watch commercials. Which I know sounds crazy, but I spent years illegaly streaming nhl games with no commercials and it drives you crazy just staring at a screen during intermission that says commercial break in progress.

Have you tried Sling? It’s full of good stuff, but also loaded up with garbage...

We use Newsy (on Roku) for local news.

It’s just ok. OTA is better.

If you want to save money, you have to sacrifice some shows. That’s been a given for a long time now. No Game of Thrones without an HBO subscription. You’ll miss some college games without ESPN or FS1, so you have to get the sports package.

Fubo is a decent solution for sports, but it’s not exactly cheap compared to cable. They have other channels too, but seems to be sports focused.

Don’t forget that an antenna is still an option, as well as dish or DirectTV, so there are still plenty of options available if you don’t want to use cable.

I’ve got all those on Directv Now. I don’t subscribe to Showtime, but it’s available. We were early adopters, so our package is the Go Big for $35/month and includes more channels than we had on cable/satellite. Cool thing is, as the year went on, the local affiliates have been added as well, so while he had HD antennas, he don’t need them anymore.

I’m not sure what’s on their other tiers of service.

I know the Commercial Break In Progress screen well, and I do not understand how no one has figured out how to fill that space with a commercial. I use the time to browse Oppo or get another beer.

What I am saying is, that is the old way of thinking. I don’t need home shopping network and CSPAN. I just want say 10 channels and that is all I want. It pains me that I can’t get that... but I am hoping amazon will provide an answer.

I looked at sling... Wasn’t impressed with the line up. Tried Roku. Also didn’t like it. Not everything I want is available on one, so I need a slew of gizmos and subscriptions to come up with what I want, and then all that adds up to be more than TV service.

I don’t want any part of illegal business. It’s not worth it to me.

I looked at Sling. I think it was their fine print legal that reminded me of AOL. If you want to cancel, you first have to go to mars and bring us a rock.

I’m with you on that. But I’d happily pay the same I was paying for cable, to be able to watch what I want, when I want, without commercials! It’s like ~30% of a 30-minute show, which is crazy. Even using the on-demand stuff with cable isn’t nearly as simple or intuitive as a Roku or similar device.

You know what really grinds my gears though? Sports. The ONLY way for me to see all the Red Sox games (I don’t watch them all, but I would like to be able to turn one on at any time) is to have a cable package that includes NESN. This would of course include a cable box (for no apparent reason) and jack up my cable to around $120/month. Instead I use MLBTV and a VPN. But at least MLB tries to let you watch all their games by paying up front, if you ignore the blackouts.

Football, on the other hand, is a debacle. There is no way to pay any amount of money to see all the games, short of having a satellite service with every available football channel to the tune of probably $200/mo, not to mention the hardware, including a satellite mounted on my house. So I end up streaming games online illegally. I WOULD GIVE YOU PEOPLE MONEY IF YOU WOULD LET ME. At least with baseball I can pay.

[/end rant]

That’s where we were at before. About $220 or so. Now with Comcast for internet, (and home phone...why, I don’t know) and Directv Now, we’re at $110/mo. I’d like it to be lower, but I’m a lot more comfortable being at that fixed rate than various “triple play” style promos that basically triple, quadruple in price when the promo is over.

Luckily I realized long time ago, weather my team wins or loses, it has no affect on my life other than waste my time and hard earned money.

My wife sorta agrees, but still wants to watch hockey from time to time.

I am 100% in agreement with you. If I am paying for TV service, how dare they show me commercials? I am paying for service. That should be sufficient to cover cost of my service. If not, I will make a decision if I want to continue or not. No. They want to shove commercials down my throat and claim without it, my service fee would be much higher. Piss off, hosers.

Unfortunately, I need news. World is too volatile to not know what’s happening.

That’s probably the end goal for most channels, to be available to be subscribed to from almost any “supplier”, but it’s not going to happen quickly.

But the end result of that could possibly be that the 10 channels you want would cost the same as a basic cable package. $2-$4 per channel, and you might as well get basic cable or a slightly higher package.

I really doubt the “a la carte” method would make it any cheaper overall, once they finally implement it.

I get super angry when they tell me 3 services cost less than 2. On what planet?

If I go to a car dealership an I want them to do Oil Change and brake service, they don’t tell me it will cost more unless I do a fluids flush too. Then it will be cheaper...

I hate Cable companies... I hate dish companies. I hate them all.

Why do I need a home phone? I have a cell phone. I don’t need extra service so it should cost less.

Roku is just a platform, but it tends to have more available due to longevity in the market and the open developer kit. I personally haven’t seen anything I want that I can’t find there, but YMMV

Well, Amazon today announced they were planning on doing a skinny bundle, but are not going to continue with it. Instead, they will be offering channels a la cart.

I am not sure if I am looking at this new a la cart on amazon yet, or if its still their skinny bundle. Once live, I am in both feet.

I get my news from the internet. It’s really easy to check a website 4 or 5 times a day. I don’t need to watch Anderson Cooper for 45 mins to be in the know.

Since I cut cable, I only watch maybe 4 hours of content a week thru Netflix, Youtube and Amazon combined. I can’t believe how much of my earlier years were wasted watching 2-3 hours of crap a night.

I do agree, but still I like to watch. Usually these days I’m doing other chores also, or reading something then look up when the announcers get excited.

On the news front, you could get a Roku and there’s a great news app on there, it will even have local channels’ newscasts (probably). No cost once you buy the device, which is cheap (~$50?).

I remember when 9/11 happened. Every possible news website was overwhelmed and was frozen solid for hours.

I was able to stream CNN Live when the vegas shooting happened for a few hours. Most news pages are updated every few mins this day and age. I remember back in 2001 they would only be updated a few times a day.

Really the only thing I missed was Velocity Channel, but youtube has plenty of free content these days to make up for it.

I cut the cord a few months ago and I really don’t miss any of the cable content. I have OTA, plus Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. The biggest difference it’s made is I’m now getting about an hour more sleep each night. No more mindlessly channel surfing before bed.

I’m paranoid by VPNs because using one means someone else gets to use your ip address and who knows what they’ll do with it. At least that’s how my BIL explained it to me, and he is a network dude.

Interesting, I hadn’t thought of it that way. I know a fair amount about networking, but I’m not professionally trained or anything. I may dig into this further. I think it’s key to use a reputable service for your VPN, there are a lot of them and not all are equal.

Now I can see myself going down a rabbit hole trying to learn more....
