What cars come with mechanical key (i.e. not push button start)?

My sister just bought a 2018 Toyota 4runner Sr5 premium (over 40k) beautiful suv. It looks amazing. I was surprised to see that it still had a traditional, mechanical key and not push button start. Got me to thinking what other cars/SUVs use a real key still? Anyone know? Thinking of 2017 and newer. Thanks!

Unpopular opinion: It’s the 2018 model year for cars now, and I know all of these standard safety systems are great, but please just make stuff like push button start and a power driver’s seat standard.

I know. I just opened it up for cars from ‘17 too. I don’t have an issue with push button start vehicles but I have read that some people are forgetting to turn the car off when they pull into the garage and leave car running.

Unless it’s a coupe, then give me some option of fast release forward for loading kids.

Nothing is worse than standing in the rain for 30 seconds while you move your power seat forward and backward to let your 5 year-old in.

My garage door opener is power and has a cord I can pull to make it manual. Why can’t power seats figure this out?

I think most base-model Subarus are keyed.

Technically, all cars with push-button start also have a mechanical key somewhere. The Legacy I’m driving today has one inside the key fob.

Lots of our FCA cars still use keys we have to stick in holes to start, like my RAM.

Push buttons are reserved for higher trim levels for the most part, even on the most expensive and newest of vehicles.

Being FCA I know that’s a given (hahahaha cheap old shit!) though.

I drove a 2017 F150 that had remote start, but you still had to put the (metal) key in the ignition and turn it to actually drive. It was about a $37k MSRP, if I’m remembering correctly.

Base model manual Sentra key to start, so i’m am aslso assuming the Versa and versa note.

my wife also did it with her 2013 toyota prius. not all her fault. the car gives no warnings that it’s on and if it is in pure ev mode, you don’t hear it. she was distracted and one thing led to another and boom. thank goodness i went to garage and saw it on.

i hated my push start, and drove cars with keys for over 20 years. then after a few months of going keyless, would want to turn back.

now if only my house would unlock without take my keys out of my pocket.

the real solution is when our phones will replace our keys too. They are taking over or debit and credit cards. that being said 10 years ago I would never imagine myself saying that.

I’d rather have a key because its more satisfying and also reminds you that you need to take it in and out of the vehicle. We could make keys, perhaps electric that simply go into a slot in the dash and then take it out again

there’s no practical difference between a key- or a push-button start. pretty much every car made today controls the starter by the PCM. the days of the ignition actually physically closing a switch to operate a relay to trigger the starter solenoid are long gone. if you have a key, when you stick it in the ignition the RFID transponder first verifies it’s an authorized key, then when you twist it to start the switch sends a “START” request to the PCM. the PCM then operates the starter solenoid until it either senses the engine RPM reaches self-sustaining speed, or gives up after a programmed amount of time.

if you have a fob/push-button system, the RF transponder verifies the key when you enter the car. when you press the start button it sends a “START” request to the PCM. the PCM then operates the starter solenoid until it either senses the engine RPM reaches self-sustaining speed, or gives up after a programmed amount of time.

This! I love push button on my my mazda.

The Honda is weird. Key in, turn that, then you press the starter button. Turn the key to turn it off.

I can see how it might have been charming when the car was new. I suppose it is cooler than just a key.

I can imagine a car designer 100 years from now. Customers are complaining that they’re frustrated with carrying large fobs for their electro-cars in their pockets, and hate having the fobs fly around inside the car and block up the cup holders.

If only there was a solution to have a convenient place to store the fob?

A brilliant engineer looks at the large blank space between the steering wheel and the dashboard and says “Hey! That’s unused real-estate in interior design!”

He says. “What if we created some sort of storage space for the fob here?”

Another smart engineer says “And what if we used the fob to start the car?! We could get rid of the separate start button, saving some money for the bean counters, and it would double as a safe and convenient place to put the fob?!”

“The only problem,” says the first engineer, “is that the fobs are so huge that they might not fit very well into the blank space.”

“I know,” says the second engineer “we could implement a spring-loaded, slim metal device that pops out of the end of the fob and easily slides into a matching slot in the car, and allows you start it. We’ll call it a KEY!”

“We’re design geniuses” The engineers declare!! Beers all around.
