Applies to identical auto parts as well.

Sometimes you work on the same thing for so long, or you have been doing it for so many years, you just have to laugh at yourself when you get that fraction of a second “Oh no! Which one is the replacement part?!” panic, because you took it out of the static bag, set it down, and had to go do something else for a few minutes.

Then you remember that you taught yourself to always leave at least one cable wrapped up on the new part, make a mark with a Sharpie in a spot that won’t be visible after re-assembly, or one of your other habits.

Luckily, in the case of most auto parts, the one with the most grease/dirt/rust is usually the older part, unless you make the trip to the junk yard, and even then, you’ll often make a clean spot or two removing the part.

How hard is it to fix one of those things? Given how tightly packed everything seems, I’m guessing difficult?

Why mark the new part instead of the old part you are getting rid of?

Eh, not really, it’s just taking off a bunch Philips #00 screws and plugging connectors in

Because the new part is already out, more of it is accessible, and there is usually a clean place to make the mark. The mark is usually a dot, I’m not autographing these things.

Philips? I wish. I don’t recall a single Philips in that machine, and I removed everything but the speakers. Torx, pentalobe, security torx, suction cups for the all-in-ones, heat gun for the bezels if you need to replace just the LCD or backlight, phones and tablets are... I hate phones and tablets. You have to heat to open, then clamp and re-heat to reseal, and you better test it first if you can. Desktops that are not all-in-ones are easy. PCs are always easier than Macs, and I’m not a one or the other person they are all just tools, and if they do what you need, use the one you like.

I built my first machine (286) in 1984, so it’s been fun to watch them progress and shrink and speed up. After 22 years, I’m no longer a sys/network/giveittothatguy admin, so I do this for fun these days. Cyber Security Analyst is paperwork over screwdriver and full of standing by to stand by.

This laptop was going to be tossed after it was dropped on the corner of the screen. Ordered a replacementscreen for $200.00, now I have a MacBook Air I’ll give one of the kids under the tree.

Patience and a Ohuhu tool kit is a good start.

I despise the battery assembly in the Air models.

so, did you have it before it dropped or did you buy it after?

My current 2012 MacBook Pro was my dad’s, he dropped it one day and the screen broke, but nothing else took damage. We replaced it for $200 as well and sold my old 2010 white MacBook for $200

I was asked to fix it, and as happens quite often, the person that dropped it decided they wanted a new one anyway, and told me to keep it. I burned them a Blu Ray of their data and wiped it.

Wait? You can just do that? Burn data to blu ray? Do macs even have blu ray?

External that the user has can read at least single layer data discs, and burning a Blu Ray... Yes.
