I am working on an entrepreneurship project for school and we are testing our MVP. We are working on creating a marketplace (a la fiverr) that would connect emerging journalists with legacy publishers like the New York Times. The idea is to connect compelling writers (like some of you on Oppo) with small audiences, experts in a field, or people who experience an event firsthand with major publishers to provide them with compelling content on the cheap and give emerging authors a career boost.
To test our MVP, our group is creating a sample book of some examples to show to legacy publishers and get their feedback on our product. To do that, we have to create samples. I’ve come to Oppo because I know some of you are very talented writers and will provide me with a more diverse pool than my college friends. I would really appreciate if some of you could help me by creating samples. The format above is basically what I’m looking for: Title, short Description of the article, some Keywords for search hits, and a Price at which you would hope to sell the article to publishers(price is somewhat arbitrary as I have no clue how much these should sell for, but I’d be interested to see what y’all say). The samples can be about anything and don’t have to be about cars. They also don’t have to be pretty, you can just post your responses as comments below.
Any of you that help will be much appreciated, and I will answer any questions ASAP. Other feedback is appreciated as well.
EDIT - Not looking for full articles just short descriptions, as if you were to create a Craigslist listing for your articles. Want to clarify, your responses are not going to be sold or ever used to generate revenue. They will be shown privately to 2-3 connections to see if this idea has any traction. Sorry I didn’t make this clear earlier.

I think it would be great if Kinja had a Direct Messaging system, that way it would be easier to collaborate on articles and create a more compelling/complex environment here in Oppo, one that regards true articles higher than hour rule pictures of old citroens.

I’m not sure what you are looking for exactly. It sounds like you are either sourcing free articles to market, or asking us to create free content for paid promotion. Am I missing something?

It sounds like when I was a young musician, and people wanted to hire us for free in exchange “experience.” It’s a running gag in the professional world when a gig pays little money to say, “Yeah, but it’s good experience.” At a certain point in one’s career, it’s not a terrible thing. But any time you are hired for your expertise, no matter how raw, you should be paid for it.

What I am looking for is a sample like the picture above. I don’t expect you to create a real article, just a description. These samples won’t be sold or ever used to generate revenue. The goal is to have something, a “minimally viable product” to show to potential users so we can evaluate the potential of our concept. We are testing whether publishers would even be interested in the idea.
The end goal is to create something like a Craigslist, which you could them put LC stories or trip reports for sale on, and instead of posting them on Overland kinja , a site like Jalopnik would pay you for them and then publish them.
TL;DR We’re create sample “ Craiglist-style ” listings of articles to show to a few media/journalism connections for evaluation.

I like the idea and I think its got merit, but wouldn’t it make more sense to scour Kinja and simply ask the author for articles you like and then ask in that article if its okay to use their article as a source for creating these samples? A link to this article or a copy pasted response, and then you create the samples with the blessings of the author. Or asking them to supply you with a summary and key words? I think its asking a lot of people to just ask them to create samples for your project.

I was hoping to have y’all create them to test how that process goes. Clearly, I’m bad at explaining this idea so even that feedback has been helpful. Just to be clear when I say “sample” I mean a summary and keywords like your second question suggests. There doesn’t even need to be an article to back it up. We are testing the listing/marketplace part.
The best way I can try to explain this is to imagine if you were to create a Craigslist posting for an article you had written. You would need a description of your article, a price, and a few keywords at the bottom to make it show up at searches. That part is what I’m looking for. Not articles.
Maybe my choice of the word “sample” was bad cause it sounds like writing sample . I do agree it would be silly to have Oppos write articles just for me.
Does that clear up what I’m looking for? Also, if you have feedback on how I can explain this idea more clearly I would appreciate that too.

I understand that you aren’t looking for articles, but you are still asking for free work by asking us to create these craigslist style snippets. I don’t think its the explanation that needs to be addressed, I think you are asking for something that people aren’t comfortable providing gratis.
My suggestion is that you seek out articles you think have value, then ask for permission from the author to use their story as a framework for you to create the snippets you are looking for.

Ok that’s fair. The hope was to get other people to create snippets to have them not all be in a similar voice, and test if people are receptive to the idea. Clearly, as you’ve elucidated, people aren’t comfortable with that idea which is valuable feedback too.
