Sorely missing the point edition. As an aside, I do like the conversation inlining that Kinja does now.

Why would we listen to Harvey Weinstein about anything?

He was wrong about watching him shower, and he’s wrong about the Lexus IS F.

He’s likely wrong about Fancy Kristen, so that’s three strikes right there.

I see that VAG owners on the internet haven’t stopped being mouth-breathing morons.

But a 2001 Corolla could be had in “Functional” trim. Audi never marketed such an option.

The commentor presupposes that in order to have performance you have to be unreliable. Those two aren’t mutually exclusive.

And for those of us who want to, you know, DRIVE our blasted cars, reliability is actually a really nice thing to have.

The name should have been a dead giveaway that your best course of action would be to choose to ignore their response.

I’ve noticed a recent increase in new members with “strong opinions.”

How much do you want to bet that this dude has never worked on or owned an Audi/VW in his life?

He’ll start throwing rally cars from the 1980's at you just to move the discussion further off track.

2001 Camry? WTF does that have to do with ANYTHING?

Apparently anything that isn’t his beloved Audi centrefold is a Camry.

Notwithstanding the fact that a 2006 Camry V6 has more power than a B5 S4, and will be more reliable.

You know, I wonder how a 2000 Camry LE V6 manual with the TRD Supercharger (warranty intact) would compare to a 2000 Audi S4, performance-wise. (I’m pulling it back a year to 2000, because that was the last year of the TRD supercharger being approved for a 1MZ-FE. Granted, we are talking about the 1MZ-FE, known for sludging, but my money’s still on it being more reliable than the APB.)

The S4 is going to have more power (251 hp, 258 lb-ft, versus the 242 hp, 242 lb-ft of the 1MZ-FE with the TRD supercharger), but it’ll also be around 500 pounds heavier (it’s 529 pounds heavier than the naturally aspirated car), and with a much lossier drivetrain (longitudinal AWD, instead of transverse FWD).

Now, the stock rubber and suspension tuning on the Camry is going to lose to the stock rubber and suspension tuning on the S4, but the rules were to get the Camry going as fast as the S4 while maintaining reliability. Once you do that? My money’s on the Camry everywhere - even handling, the S4's engine layout is not optimal for handling.

You want to track the Audi, and then hand it back to someone else to take care of all the breaky bits on it.

Then you’d drive home in a 5 speed Camry with a supercharger, and have something really unique: a not completely boring Toyota.

So I found out that the TRD Camry, at least in Solara form, actually isn’t as fast.

It’s 0.1 seconds slower to 60, and 0.2 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile (although 1 mph faster). It does have more grip, though, but slower slalom speed.

But since it doesn’t break down, it will do 0-150,000 miles a heck of a lot quicker than the Audi.

Well that’s the most important thing - we got a laugh and the day went by quicker. I’d call that a win.

And I’d wager that he doesn’t own any car at all, let alone a recent vintage S4.

German cars ARE neat when they work right. Which is rarely for long periods of time, even in warranty. I had one, also a B5 coincidentally, and that was enough to sour me on German cars. Seeing all of the issues acquaintances of mine have both in and out of warranty have fully convinced me that any modern German car is for warranty period use only. Anything after that is a fool’s errand because the car will turn to utter shit. After the German car, I owned 2 Subarus, a Mazda wearing a Ford dress, a Toyota and a Honda. I still have the Ford, the Yota and the Honda.

The other thing that turned my off of German cars was the culture the enthusiasts partook in. So much elitism and general snobbery. What a bunch of oxygen thieves. Nutswinger example number one up there in your screenshot fits in well.

And I’ve owned good German cars out of warranty (my BMW Z4 and the diesel Merc E Class [before I totalled it]).

Still didn’t stop me from buying a Chevy over an M4.
