Kinja'd!!!

The later years of the last gen xc90 are cooler than the current gen. Here are a couple reasons why:

- better proportions. The new one has a stunning front end but the back looks so bulky and drops too low (for my taste)

- v8 that sounds ridiculous with an exhaust

- Has the great, handsome old Volvo front end like an s60/s80 except SUV’ed

How’s reliability of the v8 model?

Both old and new XC90 and the new XC60 are the only SUVs/CUVs I like. But after looking at both new(for over a year) and old(over 5y) belonging to a neighbor of mine and I will tell you the new XC90 is so much sexier looking. The pictures just don’t do it justice. Also that V8 rare as hell.

Yes, but the outside is for everyone else and the inside is for you.

Can’t argue about the V8 sound

Yeeeeeeee! The old XC90 wheels were better too. I like them so much, I got a set for my Focus ST.

My boss had a V8, sadly it looked a bit boring, but sounded great.

Yeah the new one looks better in person for sure but I still ogle a v8 last gen r design when I see one. They are rare as hell and I still I think I remember every single time ive passed one on the road because they make me stare.

Yeah the new volvo interiors are unparalleled. That being said, the old one is still a comfy place to be!

The R design in gray or red always catches my eye on the road.

Yeah the R design really helps make it look aggressive but clean. That motor is a peach though.

I believe its actually pretty decent, besides the high cost of replacing volvo suspension components and things like that. Motor holds up well though.

It just looks more offroady. New one looks like a luxurious city car, the old one more utilitarian. Like rich people can go hunting in it.

Have you tried the seats in both? Old ones are super comfortable. Haven’t got any longer experience with the new one.

Old one has great seats but apparently the new one is incredible. I had a Volvo s70 wit h great seats as well

Volvo has some of the best modern interiors. Can’t argue with that, but I love the old exterior for what it is

I’ve tried the seats in both! The top-line seats in the new one could even be more comfortable than the seats in my old one, which keep you fresh after driving 1,000km in a single sitting... There’s more room in the old one, though.

Bulletproof, if you buy the facelift model. The first year of the V8 was missing a drain hole, which messed with the engine, long story short.

As the owner of an old one, I can’t disagree! TBH, I’d never sell mine for a new one.

Bought my XC90 3.2 AWD brand new 8 years ago. With almost 180k kms on it, it’s still our main car and will be for a while yet...

Highlights:

- Took it up and down the Pacific coast twice. You can drive it for literally all day and never feel worn out, the seats are that good.

- When we moved, we only needed a moving van for half a day, to move extremely bulky stuff like the sofa, washer & dryer, etc. Everything else fit in the Volvo!

- The only mechanical problem it’s had during these 8 years is that I had to add one quart of oil on two separate occasions, the first being at 140k... Zero problems with the 6-speed transmission (it’s the ‘learning’ type, that adapts its behavior to your driving habits). Knock on wood, the AWD system seems to be functioning well (if the massive snowstorms we had last winter are any indication, at least). It’s even still on the original battery!

- After only a couple years of ownership, I felt like it was worth every last penny; I’m more satisfied now. Skipped the extended warranty, and that ended up being the right choice: all out-of-warranty work hasn’t even come close to the $2-3k the extended warranty would’ve cost. Also good to know that Volvo now has lifetime warranties on genuine parts installed at a dealer.

Long story short, it does exactly what it says on the box: it’s safe, reliable, very roomy, very practical, comfortable, and it’ll take you wherever you wanna go.

The V8 has tons of easy power on tap, and actually gets the same real-world mileage as the 3.2! Would’ve gotten one, but it was $8k more to buy back then... Even so, the 3.2 has no problems getting up to speed if you use the manual mode. Handling is surprisingly good, though the R-Design model is the way to go if you wanna carve corners on the regular.

Consensus on the forums is that the 2.5T, 3.2, and V8 are all reliable. Just avoid those early V8s due to the problem I mentioned, and avoid the T6 unless you’re cool with rebuilding its GM four-speed.

Sounds awesome! I just went and looked on autotrader and the V8 model is rare! I only found one in the 50k mile range and the next one up is at 80k miles. Which may be worth it, since it’s going for $6k less.

Did they not make an R-Design V8?

Kinja'd!!! "Spasoje" (Spasoje)
11/28/2017 at 16:25, STARS: 0

They did make a V8 R-Design! Quad pipes on that one means no spare tire, but other than that, it’s pretty much perfect.

But yeah, V8's were relatively rare to begin with (I imagine b/c of that higher upfront cost), but they’re definitely worth the wait if you’re buying used. All the traditional, pre-purchase due dilligence applies, of course.

Ah I found a handful! They seem to be around the 17k mark for something around 70k miles. Quite a jump up from the regular V8 models I was looking at yesterday. But I have to say, they are very good looking and very nicely appointed interiors.

Good handling as well! The only drawback I noticed (and the reason why we didn’t get one) is with the R-D’s thicker front seats, second row legroom is reduced a bit. It made the difference, as we’re a tall family (despite ours being a 5-pass, which has the back row placed further aft than the 7-pass). Worth checking out, though, as you might not have that problem.

Ah I’ll keep it in mind if/when I find myself shopping for these.
