Requirements:

It has to have all wheel drive

Has to have at least 5 seats

Has to have an engine bigger than a four cylinder (he says four cylinders are ok but he prefers bigger engines)

This one is also a must: MUST BE RELIABLE

Unrelated cayenne for your time

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Decent WK or even some WK2 examples can be found for under 15k with 4- or all-wheel drive

What does off-road capability mean:

Is it just dirt roads?

Does he have a farm?

Rock-crawling with an SUV?

Get an XTerra. It’s under rated and he won’t have to pay the Toyota tax.

Nissan Xterra is definetly the answer.

4Runner maybe? What is he planning on doing? Because if he needs off road capability means for like snow or something and doesn’t know much about cars he might be better off with something that has a good automatic all wheel drive system as opposed to a transfer case you need to think about.

Like my dad has a 2004 Acura MDX and despite being a bit of a snooze-fest it’s actually very capable for anything that normal people do in their cars(quite good in the snow, enough ground clearance to not have to worry on a forest service road etc). And it’s been reliable, comfy highway cruiser, good sound system, lots of space. All-in-all it’s a very good car for doing what people that aren’t weird do with cars.

edit: for all the shade I like to throw at him for it being boring, unimaginative and a bit of a mom car a few weeks ago he was out of town and left me with permission to use it if I wanted. A good friend who I hadn’t seen for awhile happened to be in Seattle(3 hours away) that same weekend for business/pleasure and I figured I go hang out with him for one of his pleasure days. Between my E36, second-gen 4Runner and the MDX you know damn well that I took the one with leather seats, cruise control, a good stereo and the peace of mind nothing is going to break along the way.

I’ve always liked the Xterra but if you have $15k, the interior and driving experience of the 4Runner is well worth the money. While, great, Xterras are cheaper for a reason.

11/14/2017 at 11:10, STARS: 1

Oh, then no. I’m surprised he doesn’t have a better idea of what he wants in that case tbh. He also wants four-wheel-drive, not AWD. There is a difference. You can have both with a locking center diff, but for real off roading you really do need proper locking four-wheel-drive.

I mean in that price range, assuming he wants something newish and is planning on using most of the 15k you really wind up with the 4Runner and XTerra, maybe an 80 or 100-series Landcruiser, or the FJ-Cruiser if he’s cool with something funky. Maybe a JKU but they don’t seem to have quite made it down under 15k yet, maybe once the JLs start to hit.

Oh and we can never forget the Land Rover LR4 if reliability is truly his priority

2011 or 2012 WK2 Grand Cherokee with a low-level trim? If you can accept that you’re probably getting a car with over 100k miles, you can likely find one that ticks all the boxes. From everything I’ve been told, the Pentastar V6 is very reliable, and the Hemi is good minus a couple hiccups (thanks for the info, Takuro!)

Just putting my money where my mouth is: I just bought a 2012 GC (4x2) w/ 86k for $15,000 out-the-door.

Toyota 4Runner (3rd gen) - 99-00 Limited has selectable modes including full-time 4wd, optional locking rear differential. All 01-02 trims have full-time 4wd and traction control, no locker. Full-time is an electronically controlled slip-n-grip type setup. It’s a V6 but it’s dog slow.

Toyota 4Runner (4th gen) - all years (03-09) have a Torsen center LSD. The V6 and V8 have similar power. The V8 has more torque and towing capacity but isn’t much faster if at all. Both have halfway decent power. The V6 has a rwd mode, the V8 does not. The V8 drinks more fuel and often comes along with an air suspension that can be expensive to fix. The 09 Trail Edition has a rear locking differential.

Mitsubishi Montero (3rd gen) - the Limited has full-time 4wd with a rwd mode and a center planetary gearset LSD. The XLS has a more basic part-time setup. The 01-02 Limited has a 3.5 liter V6 and a rear LSD, the 03-06 has a 3.8 liter V6 with similar power, an open rear diff, and off-roady traction control. Roomy & comfy, with a 3rd row, but also tippy and slow.

Nissan Pathfinder (2nd gen) - The 96-00 is super slow like the 3rd gen 4Runner. 01-04 have the VQ V6 with 240 hp. The 01-04 LE has full-time 4wd with electronic slip-n-grip action. Also will often, but not always, have a rear LSD. The 01-04 Infiniti QX4 is just like a Pathfinder LE but with a few more luxo features. Nothing major though. The older slower QX4 also has the full-time 4wd but not the Pathfinder LE.

Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) - These aren’t necessarily “reliable” but they are cheap to fix. The straight 6 isn’t exactly fast but it’s a super bulletproof motor. It comes with the NV242 (“Selec-Trac”) transfer case with 2wd, awd, 4H, and 4L modes. The awd mode uses a hydraulically-actuated limited slip differential that’s not quite as seamless in its action as the 4th gen 4Runner or 3rd gen Montero. There are 2 versions of the V8, regular 235 hp and HO 265 hp. Most all V8s have the NV247 transfer case with only awd or 4L modes. It’s branded as Quadra-Trac II, or Quadra-Drive which adds front and rear hydraulic diffs in addition to the center diff.

All but the 4Runner have unibody platforms but their suspensions are more trucky than a typical unibody car in that they have live axles on one or both ends. They’re no less capable off road but they have more room inside and are more comfortable to live with day to day.

It’s not bad, it’s just not as nice as a 4Runner. Especially with a $15k budget. If it was a $5k budget I would agree.

Resident Xterra apologist here: you are absolutely correct.

However, I will say that “five seats” is a stretch for an X. More like two seats and some incidental passenger room (like an extended-cab pickup, you CAN sit back there, but you don’t want to). The Pathfinder (especially the 05-12 generation) fits the bill better in that regard, though it doesn’t have the solid rear axle.

These are all the answers I would have given. I personally have had two third gen 4runners and a vq35 pathfinder and although they are great they all had rust problems on relatively clean examples. At $15k you are really looking at the 4th gen 4runner which is much nicer and wont have as many problems with rot. I am weird but for $15k id probably get the worlds cleanest montero and have $9k leftover for...more monteros? LS swap?
