Kinja'd!!!

I test-drove this Cooper S (manual) today and was bored before the drive was even over. Too big, too disconnected. Post modern cars, for sale new, that are fun. I’m spoiled by my manual-everything ‘91 MR2. AMA about the MINI too!

New Miata is a blast on and off track. This coming from a hardcore na/nb Miata purist.

Hellcat is an absolutely insane smile machine. Try to have a frown while driving it, I dare you. Check your local turo!

I hated the long, vague clutch, but other than that the Fiesta ST was enjoyable.

370z is great if you can accept the fact that it’s a grand tourer and not a sports car.

Accord. Very fun with a manual. Very comfy.

500 Abarth. Interior ergonomics are strange but that’s okay because THAT EXHAUST

Mercedes whatever the crazy AMG hatch with a 4 cylinder making like 350hp is. I always forget the name but good lord is that a hoot

Fiesta ST is still on sale.

Everything the 500 abarth is, but turned up to 14. Also without the FCA reliability faults. Just keep the dealership away from it...

I’ll echo these suggestions and add a few sentiments of my own.

The 6-speed Challenger 392 is as close to grabbing lightning as you’ll get for $40k MSRP (dealers may and often will sell for less). Expect to replace rear tires at least twice as often as front tires.

The 370Z loves to rev, still has that NA power delivery, and you have to do everything deliberately so you feel like you’re working to drive the car.

The Abarth is stupid fun.

The C7 Z51 behaves basically like a 400 horsepower ND RF. Way more playful than I expected.

When would you say Minis stopped being fun?

Like around the 2008 year model?

Toyota 86, Mazda MX-5 / Fiat 124 Spider, Porsche 718.

There is fun to be had at most price points.

Oh, and the Jeep Wrangler.

BMW 1 or 2 series of some sort? Brother in law has 6M 1 series and loves it.

If a cooper’s too big and too disconnected, then your choices are Toyobaru, MX5, Elise, and that’s it.

In Murrica, it’s the GLA45 AMG. (They call it a crossover, it’s butched up compared to the A45 AMG... but it’s the height of a hatchback, so it’s a hatchback.)

2007 when the moved to the R56. #FirstGenOwnerSuperioretyComplex

Being serious I haven’t driven a 3rd gen yet but the R56 I drove was still fun, if rather squishy compared to my R50.

Off you go to a Ford dealer for a Mustang GT or the Chevy dealer for a Camaro SS.

I’ll bet you can’t resist smiling after the first use of the loud pedal.

The R56/R55s weren’t bad. Well, compared to the F56 anyway.

I still kind of miss my R55, although judicious use of the loud pedal in the Camaro fixes that...

The second gen isn’t bad, it just lacks the edge the first gen had.

Hot hatch - 500 Abarth, not hot hatch - MX5. I didn’t want to be that basic and get a Miata but damn I am happy I did. Roommate’s 500 is stupid fun to drive too, I’d find one to take for a test drive.

I’ll also add if you’re looking for a new daily, the ND’s interior is a nice place to spend time.

Just get a GTI or Golf R and get over the inevitable. You’ll end up there eventually.

I credit the 500 Abarth for making me an enthusiast in the first place (learned to drive manual on one.) That car is amazing but the blind spots are a deal-breaker.

The fact that the Miata does 0-60 within a second of the 370z on half the horsepower is pretty amazing. I’ll have to test-drive one again.

The S3 looks really fun as a hatchback.

Apparently not sold that way in my region though :(
