I know in 1984 Fords had an option, my friends mom had a Tempo and had no passenger mirror.

Early 90s civics it was still an option on a 91.

Semi-related, on my ‘71 Camaro some previous owner installed two aftermarket mirrors to replace the one standard one. Only they didn’t bother to measure where the passenger side one should go so it’s a couple of inches lower than the driver side one and is difficult to see.

I feel like this would be a Japan thing but I could be wrong.

I could be very wrong on this, but I believe the third gen (1984-1987) base model Civic came with an optional passenger side mirror (rear defrost and a radio were also still optional), this was in Canada though. I remember ordering a mirror for my ‘87 Sedan after the glass on one cracked, and there was an optional “blank garnish” for the passenger side. I do know for a fact that the second gen Civic (1980-1983) had an optional side mirror.

Best picture of one sans-mirror, but this is the car for everyone too young to remember them (95% of them had rotted into obscurity by 2010). oddly enough this shows one without the mirror, but with optional wheel covers.

Oh yeah I think I’ve seen that, I had a 94 Accord DX and didn’t have body painted mirrors but had both by that point.

I worked in parts at a Honda dealer in ‘91-92, and back then, most new Hondas had a passenger side mirror - but at least the base and DX Civics did not, and I’m sure the CRX didn’t, either. Not sure about the Accord DX.

Passenger-side mirrors were dealer-installed accessories, though, and the dealer I worked at put them on most of those cars right away because profit.

I dealt primarily with 4th gen Civics, but the early 5th gen cars were the same—

Canada too. Passenger mirrors weren’t mandatory in Canada until 1995, but by the early 90s just about every car had one. Hell, rear-view mirrors still aren’t a law in most provinces.

Correct- - and this continued on through at least the 4th and early 5th gen, too.

But a lot of those base model cars still got a passenger mirror, because it was available as a dealer-installed option (and in that time, Honda dealers were loading up cars with that stuff to make more $$$).

Previous owners of that thing have done so much crap to it that the mirrors don’t even make the top 10 of infuriating things. The fact that the motor mounts were the wrong ones and only bolted to the subframe by one bolt per side is #1.

I remember my ‘87 being about as “loaded” as a Sedan could be. Wheel covers, passenger side mirror, rear defrost, 2 speaker AM/FM radio (!!!), A/C (that didn’t work) and a tach. I literally think that’s it. Maybe power steering was an option, but I never had that luxury. Sorry, it also had that weird automatic trans that didn’t shift gears for you, the “Hondamatic” (or maybe mine was just broken).

I believe the Nano still has an optional passenger side mirror, possibly some other very cheap Indian and Chinese cars as well.

I’m sure the DX came with passenger mirror and rear wiper.

The CX on the other hand both were optional.

Yeah, I’m kinda mixing and matching between generations, and it’s all from memory from 25 years ago.

In the 4th gen, the Civic standard (4 speed, not 5), definitely did not come with the mirror - and I want to say the DX didn’t either, but not sure there.

Then, in the 5th gen, the CX (which replaced the standard, IIRC), didn’t, but I think they put it on the DX then.

I want to say that the 89-92 Accord DX didn’t come with it, either, but really not sure on that one.

And, most of the cars listed above *will* have that passenger mirror anyways - -dealer installed.

My folks 88' Nissan Sentra didn’t have a passenger mirror. Neither did their 86' Civic.

I found this brochure for the 1996 fancy Blackhawk trim that list a “right-hand rearview mirror” as a feature, which at leasts suggests there were some Tercels still without it at that point.

I know the 89 Civic still had it as an option. I think the 90 facelift lost it.

If I remember right the Cavalier’s side mirror was optional on the base models until 1991

Here’s an ‘88 Civic I sold a while ago with no passenger mirror. Only option on this car was an automatic transmission, which was fine because if it was a stick I likely would have kept it.

I can see the 5th gen base Civic not having it. I recently acquired a 1999 Civic fleet car that we used in a demo derby. The car was an auto but had no power steering, no A/C, a two speaker AM/FM radio, and had no passenger airbag, the airbag had been replaced with a little parcel shelf. It was very oddly optioned. As far as I can tell 1998 and newer cars in Canada had to have a passenger airbag, except in fleet versions. So I can totally see 1996-2001 Civics not having a passenger mirror (in Canada anyways).

Neither my red ‘91, nor teal ‘93 Festivas had passenger side mirrors standard. I bought the optional mirror from a forum member for the ‘91.
