Kinja'd!!!

With my discount for being a FSAE team member who is going to loan it to my team I could get a Stilo ST5 for less than that Bell I was looking at! Because I totally need a top tier, professional grade composite helmet for my amateur racing activities.

Amateur can also be spelled “pre-professional...” (credit to Zoidberg for the joke format)

I fail to see how this constitutes a bad idea. #Enabler

I mean, if it’s a safer helmet, why not?

It’s not really a bad idea, more that until I am out of school and doing all the motorsport I can get involved in I am that guy who has a $900 MSRP helmet and only uses it for autocross. I’m overbuying a bit so I don’t have to buy a new helmet in 2 or 3 years when I start trying to race all the things.

I don’t think it’s really safer than the Bell as they are both built to the same standards by 2 highly regarded companies. It’s more that the Stilo has more features I won’t use and also happens to be the helmet you see all the pros using on TV. For the first 2 years until I am out of school and getting involved in all the racing I would be that guy with the $900 MSRP (even if it would ring as $600 after discount plus my dad paying for $3-400 as my birthday/Christmas gift this year) who only uses it for autocross.

when it comes to safety, buy the best combination - buy the Bell, and add in the $300 Hans device (unless you already have the Hans, then go for broke). the old axiom: $10 head, $10 helmet....

Also remember that Helmets have a best by date in competition.

The thing is I can get the Stilo for $7 less than the Bell. HMS Motorsport is big into helping FSAE teams and their members so I would be getting 35% off the Stilo. I just don’t need a flashy $900 MSRP helmet especially when it will only really be used for autocross for 2 years until I am out of school and getting involved in all the racing I can. I’m overbuying now so I don’t have to replace it in 2 or 3 years.

This is a personal purchase for me which will be lent to the team at competition. Were following a safety first mantra in our design and processes this year and are looking at getting a Schroth SHR Flex head restraint because of its flexibility with regards to driver size and seating angle so I will likely end up with a set of mounts for that in whatever helmet I get.
