interesting story about Uber. So this last weekend I went up to SF to visit a friend and have a mini vacation. Well 90% of travel around the city was with Uber, when we weren’t walking of course.

Kinja'd!!!

So we had 6 Uber rides. All but one driver scared the fucking shit out of me. I had never seen such terrible driving in my entire life and I grew up riding and driving the freeways of LA. Sunday I drove my car cause we needed to travel far and to several stops and it made more sense that way and it was an easy city to drive in less the terrible roads.

Kinja'd!!!

They all stoped hard and quick within inches of the bumper of the car stopped at the light. If they were first at the stop light they would be 70-80% into the crosswalk, which I totally don’t get because the light sensors are a car length behind them. They never used a signal. If they were turning they would creep the turn till they were just into the crosswalk and people would have to walk around the car. They would block oncoming traffic. I had one guy kind of fly out of an alley into traffic. I thought I would never make it home, but here I am... Fuck you professional Uber drivers, especially the one that admitted she was up for 24 hours straight because she just couldn’t stop accepting ride. It straight up sounded like she was addicted to the ding on the phone.

Kinja'd!!!

The only good drive was the last one while I was there. We got a ride from the hotel to the wharf for In ‘N’ Out and Boudin bread. Well it was just the two of us and we ride shared and a guy in a Prius (all but 2 were) and a lesbian couple in the back with my friend and I was up front with the driver. It was a smooth drive, the guy and the couple were very friendly. I actually enjoyed it. So thank you one not crazy Uber driver!

Happened to me in Denver, one guy drove away while my friend only had one leg in the car and the door still open. Then he asked ME if a street was a one way and I said “no, there’s a stop sign at the end of it, so that’s a pretty good indication that you direction of travel is also okay”. Then he goes “how do I get there?” (referring to my destination). “I am your passenger, I am a tourist, I have no idea, nav says to go this way”...

Even though I use Lyft from time-to-time, I still remember my not-so-pleasant experiences dealing with rideshare drivers in downtown SF. Not only did they do everything you listed, but they would also do pick-ups & drop-offs in the middle of the road without hazards and sometimes just after the light turned green without giving a crap.

More recently, I once found myself driving along an SF street with an Uber driver in a Scion iA. The guy would basically gun it to 40-50 from a dead stop (it was a 30 zone) and then brake hard for the next stoplight. I was doing a steady 30 and I still caught up with him at the end of every block.

Fortunately there’s usually a sticker for Lyft/Uber to alert other drivers of which car to avoid.

I’ve definitely had more bad experiences than good ones. One guy was for sure on some sort of opiate, another guy was just blitzing through red lights, most recently I was hit on by an older woman which was flattering but extremely uncomfortable.

Why not just use the bus system? I spent 7 days in SF and used the bus every day to get around while not walking or being a tourist on the trolley. While it got stuck in traffic a few times and we got out and walked instead, most times it was perfect to get wherever we needed. Plus it was unlimited rides for a week at an affordable price. Sure an Uber might be a little faster but it was a robust enough bus network and aside from the trip to Oakland, not too sketchy.

My girlfriend and I stayed on treasure Island and used the bus for everything other than the BART rides to/from the airport.

I almost got run over by a rideshare driver in London last night (no sticker but he was in a prius with people in the back seat and staring at a navigator). Guy blew through a crosswalk from a side street while turning on to a larger street. Ended up getting stuck behind a trash truck. This was near Paddington station with hundreds of other people walking around. My first though was that it was a guy trying to run people over. Nope, just an asshole.

The last Uber I took, or maybe it was Lyft, I was in a brand new Corolla and what scared me was the CVT and how, for those 28 miles, he was wearing his out and headed toward that $800 fluid service that’s going to shock him at 30k miles. All that wear and tear on those new cars. Truly horrifying.

Imagine a time where we are grateful that people are merely careless assholes.

because we had very specific places to go and wanted to go when we wanted to and honestly walking from the Embarcadero to Bernal heights gave us enough of the homeless and uranie/ sewage smell to last a lifetime. So we Ubered.

I just don’t get it. But then my idea of being an Uber driver would be like driving a Chevy SS or RS7 because rediculous and I was retired early and just wanted to fill my time with driving around and meeting nice people.

Very true, but hard to avoid if you’re the pedestrian in the crosswalk.

I have a funny view of employment. I’m 53 and aged out of being considered for any sort of real job. I am a tenured public school educator and guaranteed employment for life, so long as I don’t do anything inappropriate or my union doesn’t decide to have me assassinated, which they tried to do last year, but that’s another story...

So this gig economy thing. Sure, driving Uber/Lyft, you can make a little bit of money, but you’re wearing out your car and your tires and all the rest, and it ain’t worth it. On the other hand, Amazon Flex will pay you $20/hr to deliver their packages in the place and time you choose and you can use your dependable 25-year-old Toyota and listen to the radio and not have to look at anyone.

Oh I’d hate to be a professional Uber / Lyft driver. I would want to do it because I have tons of money and nothing else to do in my suped up 4 door cars. Hell if I had the money I’d to like Deadmau5 and drive my TVR or something as a Lyft/Uber.

I took a lot of ubers this fall after my car got flooded, and generally didn’t have many complaints. One woman whose driving was appalling, with pretty much no sense of what was coming up, followed by veering across multiple lanes to make the turn. But other than her, the driving was fine. The worst though was a guy who drove fine, but had a cup full of cigarette butts in his cupholder. Good on him for now just throwing them out the window I guess, but that car was nasty.

The most Jalop uber was a woman driving a beater 3-series with a manual.

I don’t know where you live, but the Ubers where I live have been great and lovely when I visit home in LA, but SF was a mad house.
