So I had an unfortunate accident...

Kinja'd!!!

In our garage, we have a shelf for our helmets, but its mounted very high, probably 7 or 8 feet above the ground. And of course, my worst fear, mine fell off yesterday directly onto the concrete floor. I don’t see any cracks in the shell, but I am worried that it might be compromised. It was a pretty loud bang. Do you guys think I should replace it? I am leaning towards yes, but I don’t want to drop $300+ when I don’t have to

It’s obviously your head on the line, but that kind of a drop necessitates a replacement in my mind.

Older helmets that’s a definite call for replacement. Newer helmets you might be able to get away with it. Question is would you bet your head on it? It might be fine or it might not be and that’s enough for me to want a replacement.

Tricky... If you laid the bike down as you were exiting the driveway and your head & helmet hit the pavement, would you replace it? Personally, I think it’s designed to take that type of tumble but if you’re the better safe than sorry type, then replace it.

Forgot to mention outer shell isn’t what you really need to worry about. A drop from that high could have affected the protective foam and if there’s and separation in the glue or damage you could be SOL when you reach need to to protect you.

I’d be inclined to replace it. Especially if its more than a couple years old. However I’m a novice rider. I’m also the type of person who has no trouble spending money in exchange for peace of mind, even if that peace of mind is just perception.

Helmets should be replaced every 5 years anyway. I’d go ahead and replace it.

$300 seems a small price to pay when you consider the result of crashing with a compromised helmet. I’d definitely sleep better at night.

I would lean toward replacing, the shell isn’t the issue, but the deformable structure inside is single-shot.

I know Shoei will let you send in helmets for checking after an impact, does your manufacturer?

YES. Helmets are designed for one impact.

That’s why I am leaning towards replacing, because I have a hard time trusting it now. Its a new helmet, only a year old, so age isn’t a problem.

Take the liner out and check out the foam. Dropping without your head inside is probably ok if the shell is undamaged. The foam inside compresses when it gets squished between the shell and your head. Since your head wasn’t in the helmet, the foam should be ok. As always though, if you aren’t sure / scared of riding with it better to replace the lid. Also, maybe store you helmets lower, or in bags.

Yeah, no kidding. I never trusted that shelf, my uncle put it up and insisted it was fine. No more...

Contact the manufacture. Some will inspect them for free (if you pay to ship your helmet to them) and they’ll certify if it’s in good condition or needs replaced. I did this with Bell after ringing bell really hard in a race, and they said it needed to be replaced, offered a 15% discount on a new one.

Definitely replace it. A lack of visible cracks doesn’t mean that there’s no cracks within the helmet structure. It’s the same rules that apply to mountain climbing carabiners. If there’s the possibility of damage, it’s replaced because your life may depend on it.

I would replace

I would lean towards replacing it. Remove the inside padding and check the foam liner for cracks and etc. When I went down at BFR my helmet ended up being ok, but that because I hit hip and shoulder first, then my head slid on the visor. Thus sparing the helmet from impact damage.

Also, here are some ideas for you

I use the cheep method, shield hanging down. They have served me very well for many years and never a fall. The only down fall to these is two creases that will form around the rear neck skirting from the posts, but for a buck a piece I could live with it. You could also make your own display style like these out of Iron pipe and some wood.
