It’s a fuckin’ rally Geo. You’re winning no matter what order you finish in.

Those would’ve done quite well today. The UTVs on mud tires were tearing it up something fierce!

I’d be curious to hear and see about what everyone in your group drives for these things

I need to get into this.

Also... Mazda616's post about the filthy car... Right. City kids. Lol.

I didn’t take many pictures today. It was freezing, so I didn’t take my gloves off much. There’s one crazy dude who pounds the merciless crap out of Neins. I love that guy. There was a surprisingly clean Volvo 240. An LS swapped E46. A collection of clapped out beaters, many Subaru’s. The grand prize today was a lifted supercharged Miata.

Yes, you definitely need to get in on this!

I know, right? I was surprised how easily it came off at the spray wash.

I’ve seen pictures of that Miata floating around and it’s seriously cool.

How’s the modified front class stack up?

The nearest organized rallycross group I could find is about 200 miles away. Not end-of-the-world prohibitive, but it’s still a big time commitment getting there and back, and then there’s the risks involved with breaking things and still needing to drive back.

There was only one guy in the modified front wheel drive class. He’s got a rally prepped MKII Jetta, that’s really cool. I actually finished five seconds ahead of him!

I understand your hesitation for sure. Fellow Opponaut LongbowII drove his Yaris eight hours north for this event.

Maybe rent a truck and trailer for the weekend to hedge your bet? That’s a big cost though.

No, this was the last one of the year. Conditions were pretty bad. I’m sure they would’ve normally canceled this one, but the previous four events had been scrubbed for low registration and weather. We were all chomping at the bit to rally up!

The RallyMetro was in it’s element. It was one of very few cars that never needed to be towed out of a mud-hole. I only go it stock once, and was able to rock it out without assistance.

All I’d need is a trailer. My Jeep can and has pulled both the Jimmy and Niva far enough to tell me there’s no issue there. But the Jeep isn’t currently legally registered. So I need to get through that issue and a couple others before I can do too much more car stuff. Priorities and things... Being an adult sucks some times, lol.

You can flat-tow anything that you can put the transfer case into neutral, if you put the transfer case in neutral. I flat tow the RallyMetro. Kinja won’t let me upload a pic of it. No trailer to buy and store, and less weight to pull.

Kinja'd!!! "gogmorgo - rowing gears in a Grand Cherokee" (gogmorgo)
11/13/2017 at 16:04, STARS: 0

Not all transfer cases are a true neutral. The Niva’s probably okay because the centre diff lock is separate from the range shifting, so that diff will still be diffing in neutral. The MJ is a different story: neutral disconnects the input from the output, but the outputs are still locked together, meaning you’re still subjecting it to the binding you’d get in 4x4. Can’t really do it safely without dropping driveshafts.

Plus flat towing means setting up the towed vehicle for it (which no, not happening) and then subjecting it to the brutality that is flat-towing. Putting it on a trailer means you’ve got brakes for it, it doesn’t drag the front end sideways every time you go around a corner, and frankly you can’t drag a car down the road on its own rubber with broken suspension. Not to mention I live in the mountains, and would be crossing the highest summit along that highway between the Pacific Coast and at least the Great Lakes, if not the Atlantic. You don’t fuck around with flat-towing out here. Not that you’d talk me into doing it anywhere else, it’s lazy and moronic if you give a shit at all about the towed car.

There were some good shots in that. I’m pretty sure the one long POV run where it looks like he’s really hauling ass, they sped up the video. Nobody was really going all that fast, except for the guys in the UTVs.

I also take umbrage with the camera guy’s assertion that theirs was the only vehicle that didn’t need to be towed out of the mud. The RallyMetro never needed a tow, and there were a few others too.

Not when you’ve dealt with this kind of weather all your life. It was freaking cold out, and my fingers and toes were not happy with me, but it was definitely worth it.

I used to have to frame houses in this crap, now THAT sucks!
