Kinja'd!!!

After snaking this cable around furniture and shelves I found out why I got it so cheap (Goodwill Outlet, of course). OK, it can be repaired, but I need something NOW. Thankfully I had another one I can use for now, so things are up and running.

Now to find out why I’m losing signal on HDMI cables after going through a switchbox and splitter. Is it the number of connections or the total length? Either way, I’ll be ordering some short (1 or 1.5 ft) cables to make the install a little cleaner.

I almost bought a digital bathroom scale at Goodwill recently, but it would only display an error message. Another time, I bought a dehumidifier, but that was broken too. It was beyond my skill to repair, so I returned it.

Now I’m not totally against people bringing broken stuff to Goodwill, y’know, if it’s something that can be fixed by a motivated individual. But a lot of stuff nowadays just isn’t built to be serviced or repaired. It’s essentially disposable junk.

Why would I need ADB cables? Most of my Macs use USB! :P

Actually, the HDMI splitter is there so that I can convert HDMI stuff down to composite for the video distribution system in the house, with the main TV running HD. I’m OK with lower quality images in the kitchen and bedroom, since in those rooms I’m mostly listening to TV and not watching.

I tend to buy at the outlet, so it’s the stuff that either didn’t sell or wasn’t in good enough condition to sell at the retail stores. I’m cool with this because I like the challenge of getting cheap things to work, if they’re salvageable. But yeah, you’re right - there’s a lot of stuff that is cheaply made and can’t be repaired.

I know, hence the :P

I still have a couple of S-VHS decks, including a really nice high-end JVC, but haven’t had the need to use them in ages. I used to do a fair bit of tape-to-DVD conversions, but even on those I didn’t use S-video. I’ll have to check my TV to see if it even has an S-video port, but it doesn’t really matter since even the best VHS signal is still crap.
