Kinja'd!!!

...you’ll need quite a lot of it.

From GoAuto, here’s the X Class range pricing structure before on road costs in Australia:

2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class pricing*

X220d Pure Cab Chassis RWD$45,450

X220d Pure Pick-up RWD $46,400

X220d Pure Pick-up 4Matic $50,400

X250d Pure Cab Chassis 4Matic $51,450

X250d Pure Cab Chassis 4Matic (a) $54,350

X250d Pure Pick-up 4Matic $52,400

X250d Pure Pick-up 4Matic (a) $55,300

X250d Progressive Cab Chassis 4Matic $53,950

X250d Progressive Cab Chassis 4Matic (a) $56,850

X250d Progressive Pick-up 4Matic $54,900

X250d Progressive Pick-up 4Matic (a) $57,800

X250d Power Pick-up 4Matic $61,600

X250d Power Pick-up 4Matic (a) $64,500

*Excludes on-road costs

Pricing for the V6 versions hasn’t turned up yet. These are all Nissan engines - 220d is the single turbo, 250d is the dual turbo. Mind you, the X Class isn’t even due on the market until April next year!

By way of comparison with the top spec X250d Power, “other top-spec pick-up offerings [on the Oz market] include the Toyota HiLux SR5 ($56,440), Ford Ranger Wildtrak ($61,790), Mitsubishi Triton Exceed ($48,000), Holden Colorado Z71 ($57,190) and Nissan Navara ST-X ($54,490).”

“Pure” was lifted off the Smart range, not the most obvious source for pickup truck branding.

So I can have a Spanish built Japanese car in the U.K. for prices between £24,480 for a base Nissan Navara Visia up to £35,065 for a top of the range Nissan Navara TREK-1.

or

Have a Spanish built Japanese car with a German badge in the U.K. for a not inconsiderable amount of money more. Mercedes X-Class Pure for £32,772 up to £40,920 or Mercedes X-Class Power.

Yes. But the Mercedes is a better Nissan even though it it is made by Nissan. Apparently!

It’s worth pointing out too that Australia’s Navara’s come from Nissan’s Thailand factory. So, with the X Class, we get the rare distinction of getting a Euro made dual cab pickup!

Ultimately...I think we’d have to drive it to be able to figure out if we can justify the extra coin. The M-B version has been seemingly re-engineering with a wider track and a heck of a lot better NVH.

If it feels like a good place to be then maybe more than a few punters can justify the bigger loan?

If I was in the market for a pick-up, the Mercedes X-Class would be down the bottom of the list along with a Great Wall Steed (purely because it’s an un-known here).

It’d be (in order of preference).

Mixture of price, looks, comfort, brand experience, etc... dictated.

Interesting. My personal gravitation is towards the Isuzu and the Triton, mostly in terms of bang for buck. Both have great drivelines. The Isuzu 3.0L TDi comes straight out of their cab over fleet so expect great durability.

We have the Hilux in the fleet. It’s OK. Solid but unspectacular. The engine is not that willing and the Toyota Tax is real.

The Ranger is in my partner’s fleet. Excellent diesel driveline is let down by stupid packaging of small glass house, high doors, tall dash and fat bonnet so it’s a mongrel to see out of. And we are both over 6 foot tall.

Amarok is a lovely package let down by breath taking pricing and limited room in the back seat.

Navara is a mixed bag...two generations were sold here together until recently. Now with the upgraded new generation seemingly solved handling issues with the new coil sprung rear end it would be worth a look but it’s expensive and with silly packaging in the dual turbo. Single turbo version is not exactly class leading.

Know nothing about the Fiat as it is not available and the Actyon has also gone to God. Mahindra (owners of Ssangyong) prefer to market the Genio.

I’m in the market for a dual cab 4x4 pickup (currently have an aged VW T4 dual cab with syncro AWD) but none of these really fit the bill compared to the T4. And the similar or bigger alternatives like the Land Cruiser, VW T6 Transporter, Ford Transit, Iveco Daily, M-B Sprinter etc all have other cost, packaging and practicality issues.

I have even considered getting hold of a Isuzu or Triton and getting a chassis extension just forward of the rear wheels to get a proper sized tray...[sigh]

The Isuzu has a good reputation but here around where I live it’s all Nissan Navaras and Mitsubishi L200s.

I’d love a Ford Ranger tray ute.

Both a single cab and a double cab.
