Extra protection from small arms fire and shrapnel? Yeah, I’ve got nothing.

Because Army logic. There’s the smart way, the dumb way, and then the Army way.

I always assumed it was for ease of access, a lot quicker that trying to lift on of the roof, and most likely it’d be the driver changing it whilst passengers provide cover?

Loading up the LH suspension so it always runs straight on a high crowned road...?

Well I see you are looking at M37s. I assume it was to free up the space in the bed, the tires are too big for the hood, access. And putting it on the back is in the way, these were often used as ammunition haulers as well in Korea. A bit of protection for the driver isn’t a bad idea either! The one I’m most likely buying doesn’t have it, some did have a bed mount behind the passenger, vertically. I will probably go for that.

I realized it was an M37 after I posted it and saw your post - the grill and headlights tipped me off, then the specific dash layout confirmed it. It looks like a terrific ride, good luck with yours!
