It’s one thing if the car came from a state that requires a front plate, but stop drilling holes in front bumpers just to put your advertisement tag on.

Some states require a front tag which is why they drill into them.

I’m from Georgia, too, and a lot of dealers here do that.

I know, they aren’t the only ones. Some do it to new cars as part of the delivery process. They want free advertising, but the customer should have the option. If I bought a brand new car, and they drilled holes without asking I would be pissed.

Yeah I realize that. However, if you didn’t buy at an auction already like that, and the state your dealership is in doesn’t require a front plate, you are ruining a perfectly good bumper.

Yes you can have the holes filled, and the bumper repainted, but then you get rock chips a lot easier compared to factory paint.

Look at CarMax cars in single-plate states: Not all of them have front plates. It’s likely that the car either had one before (it IS used, after all), or it was in a state that requires it when CarMax took the photos.

I actually asked about this on a previous visit to my nearby CarMax, since they had a 911 and an XKR without front plates, and I was curious. I live in Missouri - a two-plate state - but because the CarMax near me also sells to Illinois customers - a single-plate state. So they tend to refrain from putting plates on the front of higher-end cars that don’t already have them, unless they’re sold to a Missouri customer (and, apparently, not even then if a customer requests it). Not only thar, plate mounts for those cars can be expensive, so they cut into the profit margin.

Boxrocket’s comment explains it a bit better than I could.

Also, CarMax doesn’t care if you want all their branding removed. I’ve bought cars from there and ask for no frames/plates along with no sticker and they remove them no questions asked.

It just depends on the dealer I guess. In this picture, they didn’t even use a plate mount. The factory mount screws into the underside of the bumper, and then has hooks that snap into the grille area above. So it can be removed if so desired without 2 eyesores. Instead someone just drilled 2 holes.

Interesting about the hooks. I’ve seen some that attach to the grille but I’ve rarely seen a front mount on a modern car that didn’t involve being attached with a fastener somewhere on the bumper cover (either the bumper itself or just below it). Notable exceptions being the previous-generation F-150 which had a replacement panel in the bumper that could be rounded to match, previous-generation Mazda 2s & 3s which have a removable panel that looks like the grille texture that hides the plate mounts (and is clever as hell, I wish more companies did that!), and c6 corvettes that use a mount with adhesive pads on the back that is stuck on (but is still oddly curved at the front so the plate has to be bent/curved slightly to fit!). I don’t remember if the c7 continued that or not.

On the plus side, 2 holes are easy enough to fill, and at least those look level and symmetrical! Can’t tell you how many cars I’ve seen front license plates mounted to that the installer must have been standing on a board or didn’t have a level handy, which is really silly since most smartphones have some sort of “level” app.

Fortunately I didn’t have to resort to that when getting my Camaro delivered. Bumper was left alone, and the dealer sticker never went on the back. I’d still recommend that dealer over others in the Atlanta market just for the personal service.
