What's the oldest car part still in use?

Not including fasteners and wires and whatnot, what is the oldest part design that is still used today exactly as it was years ago? I ask this because my Escort’s door lock thingies are identical to those on trucks 15-or-so years newer, possibly even current gen, and I don’t know how long they were used before the Escort. There has to be something that has been parts-binned for decades.

2018 Ford F-750. Rectangular sealed beam halogen headlights. State of the art, 1978, which makes it a 40 year old design component.

How old do we think the sealed beam headlights on the Express are?

Probably not the oldest though. Certainly there should be bolts or something whose design hasn’t changed in decades (because how much do you need to change a bolt).

Some little Honda parts (distributor o-rings come to mind) are the same parts they used in the 1980s. Part number and all.

Yes, but....the design is not unchanged, just the concept.

I happen to have RockAuto bookmarked... looks like the H6054 bulb goes has applications going all the way back to 1977. Nice!

the SAE J928 connector design has been around for eons. I know it was used for the speaker connectors (among other things) in my dad’s old 1973 Cougar.

These are still in use today for the standard 4-pin trailer lights.

The oil pressure sensor used in most BMW’s for the last 30+ years has had a few revisions, but is interchangeable all they way back to the e30, is still used in their cars sold today and even shows up on a few motorcycles.

Not coming up with anything all that revolutionary. Sure Optima batteries use sealed cells, but those aren’t really anything dramatically different than the typical lead-acid 12v battery.

Tesla using Li-ion batteries has been the biggest change in car battery technology, but that is not the same as the 12v battery.

I forget what part it was, but Jay Leno was redoing the brakes and suspension on one of his ‘50s Buicks a few years ago and had all the pieces spread out on the floor when a group of GM engineers came in for a garage tour. One of them walked over to the parts, reached down and picked up something and said oh, we still use this.

Spark plugs maybe? Seems like they’ve been the same pretty much forever.

The sealed-beam headlamp was my first thought, but perhaps crank-window components, for those that are still in use? Plus there may be some Chinese, Russian, and North Korean vehicles that use old designs.
