What could cause a hood release to fail?

Kinja'd!!!

This morning I tried to pop the Phaeton’s hood, and no dice. The release lever just did not respond. I’m planning to take it to my mechanic on Monday, but does anyone have any idea what could cause a hood release to fail? I’m hoping that it’s nothing terribly expensive, but nothing on this car is ever cheap.

Maybe a broken cable?

I hear that the parking brake on modern VWs is electric. Did they do the same with hood release cables? God, I hope not.

I don’t believe so.

That’s what I’m thinking. Over the years, it’s gotten progressively harder to get the hood to pop. I’m thinking something finally snapped.

I’ve seen cables fail or lose tension over time. It’s probably one of those. Sometimes they get stuck too.

Was it really cold this morning? Like cold enough for humid Virginia air to condense and freeze something up? That’ broken a few 944/vw door handles on my cars

edit: nice car BTW, I love Phaetons

Thanks! Yes, last night was the first really cold night we’ve had this season. Dropped down into the 20s.

Mine was stuck last year. The release lever pulled to its out-most position but it wouldn’t release. I pulled it super hard and fast, slow as I could, I went to the hood itself and pushed down on it/pulled it up, and got nowhere. I eventually managed to remove the grille and got it open. It was actually corrosion on the hook and hole. Greased it up and good to go.

I suspect your grille can’t be removed from the outside. Would you consider getting underneath with a coat hanger?

Was it busted, or was it just acting up temporarily?

Temporary. It was much warmer the next day, so I pressed down on the hood and gave it some pressure to move it around, then opened it up.

I can’t help you with your hood, but I did snap this next to my place yesterday. Zoom in on the badge. Made me laugh.

Happened to me on two cars: First time on the E39, the cable snapped right on the lever so you could still pull on the cable using a set of pliers. New lever fixed it. Second one was on my Renault Safrane, it actually was broken (still is) when I got it. A plastic piece on both latches the cable hooks into is missing so you can’t pull the cable enough to unlatch them. In that case I was able to open it by having someone pull the lever while I was pushing and pulling fairly hard on the hood around where the latch is, surprisingly this seems to work more often than you’d think. Requires a second person though.

Awesome car btw!
