One of the best looking economy cars.

But is it a mechanical catastrophe ?

It’s a real trim, but nothing special. The badge is stock. I see lots of Sonics with it. It gets the 1.4L turbo. Makes the same power as the 1.8 in lower trims but more torque. The RS and LTZ both get the turbo the difference is just looks.

I’ve always been intrigued but, everyone I know who owns non RS sonic or aveo hates them because they are always broken.

The sonic is to small, I prefer the cruze with the turbo.

The pre-facelift RS also had lower suspension, & a shorter ratio manual. The facelift RS is an appearance package.

My 1.8 n/a Sonic was plenty reliable, just lots of rattles.

Hey that’s what I drive!

I’ve been very happy with the car so far. Happy to help if you have any questions about it. The RS package gets a bad wrap around here as a “looks only” package, especially on the Camaro, but it’s pretty transformative on this economy car

Kinja'd!!!

The biggest change is it uses a close ratio manual transmission in which every gear ratio is different vs the non-RS. It TOTALLY transforms the way the car drives. You have shift... A LOT, but that’s what makes it fun! It also has 4 wheel disc brakes which lower Sonics do not, as well as revised spring rates, and wheels

Also, every interior surface you touch in the RS is different vs and LTZ. Unique steering wheel, ungraded (real leather/suede) front seats, different shift knob, even the pedals have metal covers over them. The gauges you look at are different too.

It’s probably rightfully overshadowed by the Fiesta ST, but I’d argue this is a better “slow car fast” daily driver. Those fiestas are really too fast to count as a “slow car” in my opinion.

True, the refresh is lamer version of the RS. I’d steer clear of that one.

No rear disc brakes on it anymore either :/

The Sonic is light enough, & not very much HP so rear drums I’m fine with. The front brakes do most of the work anyways.

Supposedly these are kinda decent but more comfy cruiser than hot hatch.

I had one for two years and it was a delightful daily driver, especially getting 40mpg on the interstate.

It also burned though a bottle of coolant every few months and three dealers couldn’t/wouldn’t fix it. I even had a letter from Chevy saying it was an issue and needs a new water pump. So I dumped it when the warranty was done.

Very true, but i think it’s still odd they removed them. :/

I think it was a Smart engineer, or maybe a Fiat 500 one, who said if the public didn’t demand it, they wouldn’t have put rear brakes on the car because they do so little in stopping the car.

They rears brakes help a ton when stability control engages though, but at that point your already sliding.

I had one of those. Loved it, super fun little car that actually handled really well when I stiffened the rear, and it was pretty dang quick with a tune. The interior in the RS was really nice for what it was, too, with high quality leather and alcantara seats

I heard the only Aveo without a broken timing belt and a ruined engine was the one that didn’t have one yet.

I’m skeptical in general of the hot hatch concept. I’d rather have a practical hatch and a hot sedan. Personal taste...

Woo boy that’s a loaded one. So this is a second generation Aveo. It also was developed in Korea. But this time around instead of basically being a rebadged Daewoo that was designed primarily for the Korean market, it was developed by GM Korea alongside Opel and Chevy in the US to be global car from the outset. The platform is also more robust and underpins the Spark and Trax/Encore as well as several other vehicles not sold in North America. The Sonic is made in Michigan (and also Mexico - I don’t know what the mix for models sold on the US is). So I’d say yes it is a Korean car underneath but at the same time it is very much a global vehicle akin to most Ford cars these days.

Hot hatch is the one car to rule them all. Fun when you want but practical when you need. And the only thing “hot” about the Sonic RS is the badging and goofy lights.

So, to your second point, it sounds like my skepticism was well founded.

To your first point, my concern with a hot hatch would be that it would be packed tight with lots of stuff that would be difficult and costly to maintain.

Hatchbacks are useful. Most hot hatches aren’t so high performance that they’re no longer useful. My wife’s Impreza hatchback is very handy. It’s slow as hell but if the same body style were made into a WRX then it’d still have its handiness while also being able to be driven stupidly when desired.

Cars like the VW GTI & Focus RS are still inherently useful hatchbacks, just with nicer motors, suspension, etc. That’s the appeal.
