Kinja'd!!!

Today is a solemn day. As my coworker and former RCMP member says, Remembrance Day is not a day off, it’s a day for reflection. Living in Ottawa, I made it to the Remembrance Day ceremony every year. This year, I’m off to the Sasktel Centre here in Stoon for our city’s ceremony. I hope everyone takes their moment of silence today in order to reflect on the past, present, and future of war and peace. Take care, everyone.

As well, for our Canadian Opponauts, if you have a family member who was in the First World War (Second World War records are protected under privacy laws), there’s a database of their files here . I found the information for my great-grandfather, and it’s kind of fascinating to go through the records. I attached one of the papers from his file on this post.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

If you are wanting to look for relatives from the second world war you can apply for records from the British archives as the British archives stored many records from colonies and commonwealth nations during the second world war and up till and I dare say after some nations gained independence.

Two pieces will always draw tears from me on this day.

We owe it to those still with us and those that aren’t to do our very best by each other and for each other.

Lest we forget.

You can also apply for Canadian records from the Second World War, it’s just these records are completely public and searchable.
