Kinja'd!!!

I’m looking for a recommendation for a low profile radio to put into the 1990 Mini. Something with a USB port to charge a phone is preferred. The thinner the better as there isn’t a lot of room in there.

Looks like basically anything single DIN will work?

That said, charging phones off of head unit USB ports is often miserable, you’re better with a cigarette lighter charger.

Can confirm. If you play music via USB it’s not bad though since you’re always plugged in getting a charge

Some newer head units do provide more power to their USB ports for charging ...

Low profile faceplate? Or just the radio part? Retrosound makes some radios with standard faceplates but teeny in-dash parts. I’ve been looking for a good one myself if I am ever lucky to get the caterham I want.

Option 2 would be anything made for motorcycles. You can get compact amps with fm receivers that should work.

I’d like a low profile faceplate as well as headunit.

Car has an amp, so that part is covered. I’d almost be good with a powered USB hub that can just feed the amp.

That’s a hard one then. most of the bike ones I found on google are amps with radios, not just radios. This is the kind of thing I was talking about:

https://www.sharkmotorcycleaudio.com/products/3000-watt-7-1-ch-motorcycle-marine-amplifier-fm-large-lcd-w-waterproof-case-2-remotes.html

which seems about as compact as you can reasonably find one of these. the only other option was something like this:

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_020GR10BT/Clarion-GR10BT.html?tp=61742&awkw=284475092556&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=178091574671&awdv=c&awug=9005886

But I don’t think that is what you are looking for either.

Thanks for looking. It’s interesting that there really isn’t much of a footprint other than single and double DIN.

It’s something I am interested in, but TBH it’s kind of a niche product. it is really only useful for those of us who like these teeny cars. For me anyway, Either will work since I will be building a fresh system.

Honestly? I would just replace your factory amp. I have plans to use one of those bluetooth amps in my trans am project if I can get it back together. I have an old delco radio to hook it up to but I figure I can always use the radio receiver on my phone.

Blaupunkt makes some nice single DIN’s that don’t look like a disco party. I got one for my dad’s MG, he loves it. I got a great deal on a previous year’s version on EBay.

Retrosound Huntington. It looks like the actual knobs and tiny faceplate are separate from the main body of the radio, so you can tuck the chassis behind the dash and just have a small bracket to mount the face on.
