Kinja'd!!!

Oppo....

I was just informed that the interview I had on Tuesday won’t result in me getting hired on. The HR team has cut the position from the budget.

I interviewed for a contract-to-full time hire management position at GM and I am devastated that I won’t get the job.

I nailed the interview. It went SO well. I was shown the whole facility and introduced to the entire management team. I had several side interviews with various managers and I was given great praise on my resume, experience and readiness to learn and grow and move forward with the company mission.

But budget cuts. Position has been eliminated.

This was a huge break for me. A career! A real career. Unlike the schmuck jobs I’ve been toiling at for the past 14 years. REAL PAY. REAL BENEFITS. REAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT.

ugh

I’m heartbroken right now.

That’s the worst, I nailed one interview last year with an oil company and they were like you’re exactly what we’re looking for, then I never heard back.

That sucks. At least I did hear back.

And I really should be more positive. It may yet pan out. The gal at the placement agency said maybe they will redo contracts after the first of the year.

Also: I legitimately met and made great impressions upon the management staff at that facility. I know several people that work there, a few have worked with my dad and there was even a guy that worked with my grandpa.

So it’s not a total loss. Just a hard hit.

I was hoping to get out of my current job BEFORE the holiday season (which fucking sucks).

I was hoping to have extra $$$$ for things I want and need to acquire ASAP.

Grrrr

Damn it, I am so sorry to hear that. I love GM but they have been fucking up hard lately. Another nail in the coffin.

I have never experienced anything like that, must have been a tough one to swallow. I’m sorry it happened. Sounds like the take-away is all positive, however. Is there any chance you can call the hiring manager/HR rep and see if there are other positions that are similar that will be filled? If things went that well, it would seem that they would want to find a place for you, if possible.

Keep in mind that not getting the job because they phased it out of the budget is heaps better than because you were unqualified, or interviewed poorly. Or severe flatulence.

I’m so sorry. I once had a dream job offered to me, and I couldn’t take it. Converse problem, but still disappointing. Hang in there. It’ll come.

Ugh. I once got told I had the job. But then the papers took over a month to “get sorted” and in the process I got informed the position was no longer open. Sucks real bad when you do well only to have the door slammed on your face...

I know how you feel, and I wish I could be optimistic but given my experience it’s hard to be. I got into a position I was really interested in last year, worked it for 3 months and absolutely loved it, then due to budget cuts I was shuffled off to something else and I have been struggling to find anything positive in my work since.

I’m in the midst of a search, and I’ve been avoiding talking about it on Oppo too much lest my current employer knows too much, but que sera sera.

I’m sorry that happened, but knowing people that work there and having them be able to advocate for how impressive you are counts for quite a lot (who you know over what you know, often), so if they would be able to hire in the future, you’re a lot farther ahead.

So sorry to hear that! However - it sounds like the interview went great, so keep in touch with HR/Hiring Manager. Sometimes, the budget will magically re-appear later, and then they’ll look to hire for the role again. Make sure that they still have you in mind!

Also, I’ve seen a number of situations where a candidate interviews well, and for whatever reason doesn’t get that position - but then, another position opens up, and the candidate gets hired for that.

Don’t count on those things, of course - but it can happen! Good luck!

I hear you, and I’m sorry for you. That blows completely. I know the feeling: I quit a shitty job in Sept 2008, expecting to get picked up by another [exponentially better] job any day. My last day at the old job was the Friday before Lehman Bros spun in. Not to appropriate a phrase from a different movement but, it gets better. After some gyrations and iterations and some introspective nightmares (never said this was going to be easy) I now work for one of those “Fortune Best Place To Work For” companies. But here’s the weird lesson: Had I waited one more week, I’d have held on to the old, shitty job out of fear and would not ever have made the career change or wound up where I am, now. Don’t lose this lesson, whatever it is (only you can figure that out)

Hang on and keep plugging. You’ll get there.

Now: Weekends here - get yourself some nice booze...or shitty booze, whatever you like; I’m not judging...

You are a victim of the year end hiring freeze. I would keep plugging on. You are a known commodity with references within the company. Remember in 51 days, it’s a new budget year and hiring start’s anew....

This is what big companies do.....

Yep, probably they were trying to backfill for someone who retired or left. Believe me that they wanted to make the hire, but timing got in the way. If you merit the offer, it will work out. If not this job, then the next.

Whatever the story, it was not about you. Almost every large company does the hiring and travel freeze in 4th quarter. It is just a dumb thing big publicly traded companies do. Show up, do good work, do the extra things well, and make it clear you want in and it will work out,

PS - keep your eye’s open for permanent gig’s at a smaller company too. On the balance, I suspect that is where the most satisfaction will be found.
