The Edmund Fitzgerald. I have a lot of Michigan people in my life down here in Tennessee and I feel like one of the only non-Northerners that has any idea about this ship.

And who here only learned about it from a song?

Yo!

I did, however, go on to learn more about it.

My friend is throwing a “Wreck of the edmund fitzgerald” party tonight. We have a keg of this stuff. I’m expecting a lot of people are going to get shipwrecked tonight.

I think I first heard about it on some History Channel show. I didn’t actually discover the song until years later.

Thanks for putting this up, I was going to. This is my favorite mix/video of the song, there’s period photos, footage and radio, and the end runs down the names of the crew.

RIP to the souls on board the mighty Fitzgerald.

Also, if you’re ever in Duluth, MN you can take a tour on the SS William A. Irvin. Its not exactly like the Fitzgerald, but its from the same era and was tasked with similar work.

I like to quote the song conversationally at work. “Y’know, Chris, the legend lives on from the Chippewa on down. You know, the big lake they call Gitchigumee?”

Why, I was just telling Ted the other day, the wind on the wires made a tattle tale sound when the winds of November came early...

Just remember that “Superior”, they said, “never gives up her dead when the gales of November come early”

I’m expecting some singalongs tonight. Including the expected one, as well as another called “Save the beer”. It’s exactly what you expect it to be about.

Interesting fact: The Edmund Fitzgerald is one of a number of ships that sunk in water less deep than the length of the boat.

That is interesting. I was thinking that 530 feet of water sounds pretty damn deep. Then I remembered that the Titanic sank in over 12,000 feet of water.

As a side note to your tour, if you want to tour the pilothouse of one of the ships that participated in the search (the SS William Clay Ford) just head to Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in Detroit, MI.

You can also see one of the forward anchors from the Fitz herself there.

A real tragedy. Great Lakes sailors got crap from ocean sailors about it being “easier” to be on the lakes, but once November starts hitting, they are so very wrong.

As well, you know how I feel about the song.
