Kinja'd!!!

Hi Everyone, I’m going to let you in on something I’ve been mulling over for some time.

I have been thinking of buying/seeking old car parts for cheap, sandblasting them and painting them to sell.

I could probably sell locally in a store or maybe online or at meets.

Any input? Good idea? Bad idea?

I live in a small townhouse with no workshop, so that limits my space to store/work on this stuff.

Go for it, if you have a compressor and a good sb setup.

Just know that sandblasting can be a big hazard to your health. Make sure you drop coin on good safety gear. Silicosis is bad.

I would do it locally at a ublast facility, so it would be contained.

If you’re doing this mostly as a hobby and any money you net is gravy, go for it. If you’re actually planning to make real money doing this, it’s probably unlikely.

If I make like, $20.00 on something, I’d be ecstatic.

This isn’t going to replace my career lol.

Just checked their pricing. You might have a bit of a tough time turning a profit, but might be worth trying to see how it goes.

Like I said, if you’re going to enjoy this regardless and are okay coming out a little in the red when it’s all accounted for, it sounds like fun. That hood ornament is sweet... I might be a customer. =)

Yeah, I dunno. Where I live has a huge market for old shit like this (HIPSTERS), so I’ve taken that into account.

Anyone who bought this would buy it as a nice object, not due to it’s significance or anything.

I get it. But Ublast has a 15 minute minimum @ $17.50. Gotta make more profit than that, and parts may take longer.

I could see this work out very well, if your marketing is good (instagram and pinterest, mostly).
And don’t sell it for too cheap. Make it premium. Folks love to pay premium.

Yeah, I figured if I took like 5 small parts like the hood ornament above and did them all at the same time, I could spread that cost across all the items.

What davesaddiction said. If you’re doing it for fun you’ll probably make a little bit of cash out of it. If you go into it expecting to make money, prepare to be disappointed at HOW little you make.

Sidney Frank - the guy who brought Jagermeister and Grey Goose to market in the US - created demand by pricing his vodka 40% above the other brands. It wasn’t any more expensive to produce or market than Absolut or Smirnoff, but when their 750ml bottles were selling for $18, his was priced at $30.

I thought about starting a hood ornament collection for my son. Problem is no yards around here have 50's cars. Well except one (Old Car City), and he doesn’t sell anything. He charges money for people to walk thru and take photos. The ones I want on eBay go for over $100 usually. So probably will never happen. It’s cooler than collecting Pokeman cards though.

Thus creating the illusion of exclusivity and luxury.

It can work. If one has access to that market.
