Allows me to check the gravity of the wort without pulling large samples or worrying about temperature correction.

Also gave me an opportunity to learn that you can’t expect sane results if there’s alcohol in solution. Thus, my beer fermented longer than was strictly necessary.

Now, the better 3/4s has made a from scratch ginger soda that worked its way into beer territory that was quite delicious. Made for some bomb-ass Mules. ( Relevant XKCD )

I think she pulled the method from Mary Izett’s Speed Brewing , which is a really interesting book.

Cool! That’s fascinating. I use one at work for checking the concentration of the coolant in the machines so I recognized it instantly and was intrigued.
