This only took 5 freaking hours! Arrrgh. This is a lock for my brand new barbell. The gym I go to is awesome but there bars suck. I understand why they have the bars(longevity) but the knurling sucks. So they allow members to bring and store their own bars there. Apparently some people’s bars have been used without permission so one guy who is an engineer designed his own lock. I took inspiration from his design. He was going to send me a .DXF of his design but has been super busy and my bar arrived by UPS yesterday so I made my own.

Kinja'd!!!

The plates are 3/8 1018 steel. The pins are 1/2 1018 round stock. The tube is 2.5 DOM .188 wall. The bushing at the end is UHMW.

Nice. You could totally sell these

Ha! A customer that comes in a lot said the same thing but I don’t think that’s something my company is interested in pursuing.

Nice work.

Somebody else using your bar is bullshit. Especially if it’s a nice pro-series bar vs. a department store one. I don’t want your blood and skin on the bar I paid for.

Then YOU could sell those.

Also, I’ve never heard of people using their own bars at the gym. What’s the problem with the average gym bar and what does having your own change?

“People don’t like our shitty barbells. We could buy some barbells they like, but nah, let’s not do that. We can keep our shitty barbells and implement a complex personal barbell storage scheme!”

(My gym’s equipment is far from ideal but I try make the best of it. It does get annoying if the one bench press that’s actually flat and not tilted to the side a little, or the one free weight bench that you can adjust the angle of the two parts independently of each other, or the one good pulldown machine is occupied. Equally irritating is when the one deadlift platform is occupied by someone using it as a gym mat.)

It’s pretty easy to have an etsy shop or even an Amazon store if you want to make them on your own. Bet some gyms would buy a dozen to rent out or sell themselves

Could you drill a hole in the end of the bar and put a padlock on it? I guess you’d have to drill a hole in the bar, but it seems like a simpler solution.

That does look cool though.

Doesn’t Pro-Loc already sell locking collars? Also, what Rogue bar?! Bought my wife a cerakoted Bella after the Xfit games this year.

It’s because most people treat commercial gym barbells terribly. 100% cringe factor.

At my gym the bars are chromed and have shallow knurling AKA not grippy at all. Chrome plating smooths the sharp edges of the knurling. I bought a Rogue Ohio Power Bar which has REALLY aggressive knurling. Its a real comfort booster for me when doing the deadlift. Also none of my gym’s bars have the center knurling which i also like for the squat. I am actively training to compete in raw powerlifting.

What’s the problem with the average gym bar and what does having your own change?

Few things.

1.) Other people’s bodily fluids- Usually sweat is not an issue but with deadlifts people’s skin and blood can be on the bar

2.) Knurling- It wears down and fills up with gym gunk. Bad knurling makes a bar slick, and a slick bar can be very dangerous.

3.) Barbell ends- they get really worn and the allen keys get loose. The actual end of the barbell can move from side to side.

4.) Nobody will whine about chalk

5.) Weight loading- some bars flex a lot, others not at all. You want to control whatever you need for big weight.

I understand. I guess I should have worded it differently. There equipment is really nice overall. The machines are amazing. Everything is new. It’s a clean gym. The bars they chose just are ideal for what I am training for. They did just buy a couple of Rogue bars and it’s awesome but it’s hit or miss if they are available when I get there. I only choose Rogue for the value. I wanted to make my own bar but I don’t have all the proper tools to do it.

Not in this particular bar. Well actually I could but pretty sure that would void my lifetime warranty.

Only did it to make it lighter. The only reason I choose that tubing is that it was the only one with a big enough ID that wasn’t excessive.

Cool. Yea, I guess if you are doing close to max reps a lot and pushing that higher you would care a lot more about how the bar grips. I did powerlifting for a bit in high school, what are you at right now for lifting?

It’s a raw steel Ohio Power Bar. Thought about the Black Oxide but my gym got one and had only had it a few months and a good portion of the coating is gone. I figured I will just get the raw steel and oil it often.

Sadly it is. I was surprised to find out it was. Almost everyone in my gym seems really nice and helpful but i guess there are a few bad apples.

I am really new to it and haven’t gone for any 1 rep max’ s yet but deadlift:345 squat:275 bench:185. Still working on refining technique with a coach.

Hammer the technique into the ground. It pays off huge in the long run. What programming style are you running? Planning on raw or raw w/ wraps?

Kinja'd!!! "Duck Duck Grey Duck FTMFW!" (theduckduck)
11/10/2017 at 12:43, STARS: 0

Working on that. Umm not sure what you mean exactly by programming style. I am working with a coach that I am starting to see once a month and he writes my workout schedule. I am planning right now to go raw.

Gotcha, there are tons of programming philosophies out there; linear periodization, daily undulating periodization, Juggernaut, 5th set, cube method, conjugate (what I follow), Westside Conjugate, 5/3/1, strong lifts, starting strength etc. etc.

Having a coach to help and guide you is the best way to start. EliteFTS has tons and tons of great educational information to learn the movements, technique cues, programming concepts.
