Joking aside, that is pretty cool. He could have just been like most other rich assholes and not given this guy the time of day. Good on him I say.

Yeah, definitely. I’m always conflicted about giving, because I don’t want to help anyone feed their addiction... I’ve thought about buying up a bunch of $5 Subway gift cards and having them handy to give; I really need to do that.

Only douchey thing is putting the door up instead of rolling down the window.

Other than that. Kudos.

That’s a good idea. I’m always leery about giving money as well, but something like that can still help a person out.

The door sill on those things is like 18 inches wide. I think trying to reach up and out the angled windows is an exercise in futility.

I’m more hesitant about opening up my windows/doors to strangers in a big city. My sister carries bottles of water and granola bars in her car which she hands out.

If they’re addicts they’re going to find a way to get drugs. Honestly, being on drugs is probably better than going through withdrawals without proper medical care.

I once watched a coworker face plant and start having a seizure, and that was just from alcohol withdrawal.

A meal is always appreciated I’m sure. However, you may come in contact with someone who needs a fix and thus cash. They may be less than pleasant if they think they’re getting cash.

Who said he was giving him money? Muah!

“Here you go, there’s a little left in this bag. I just save you a trip”

At our last place, there was a guy who, on most days, was hanging out outside/near the closest 7/11. Turns out he was incredibly nice and while he would ask for money, which we honestly never had on us. Usually he gave us a, “okay, thanks for acknowledging me.” One time though, he followed up with a, “Please then, would you help me get a hot sandwich?” So we did. Turned out that most the time when we saw him after that, we would get him a sandwich, chips, and a drink. Occasionally talk to him a bit when we saw him walking the dogs. Offering to get them something to eat is the way to go.

Water/granola bars is a great idea, too. If they end up mad at me because I’m giving them a free meal instead of cash, I’m okay with that...

I’m not rich and I don’t give the local beggars any money. I have a rule: if your shoes cost more than mine you don’t get shit.

I don’t wear shoes when driving (either some cheapo running shoes or flip flops are nearby), so they’re almost guaranteed to have better shoes than me.

I love helping people out, though I now have a new rule: Those people that I help (save for LGBTQ+ people in desperate need) WILL NOT live with me.

I was traveling with my in-laws, and, as we were walking to the restaurant from the hotel, somebody came up to my FIL and asked for money because he was traveling and broke. My FIL said, “I won’t give you cash, but I’ll buy you dinner.” The man agreed, so my FIL got him the AYCE buffet at the restaurant. I made a note of that.

Sometimes people need a little something to get through the day. Sure, they’d likely be better off with a meal than a 40 of Bull, but who am I to judge?

I’m even more wary to do that because what if they use the cards as currency? e.g. Sell the cards to another homeless person for less than the value of the cards so they can feed their addiction

Yeah, I know... clearly, the kindest thing you can do is actually sit down with them, eat with them and pay for the meal, but how often does that actually work in the situation you find yourself interacting with someone like this?

I’m irrational. I sit down with them and I get cannibalized by them. Up next on the 5 o’clock news

You’ve got to be a very strong individual to do something like this, for sure.

Very hard to say “no” to someone who is in great pain and need when you know that’s actually what’s best for them...

True. I bet taking a bullet in saying yes despite wanting to say no can break the mold.
