In tents with my son’s Boy Scout Troop.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s going to be below freezing most of the weekend. At least I have cots so my son and I aren’t sleeping on the ground. But still, it’s going to be cold as fuck this weekend. I’ve got my long underwear, thermal shirts and stocking cap already to go. I’m just hoping we have a lot of hot chocolate and a decent food. One of the scouts is planning the meals, so I have no idea what’s on the menu. Better not be cereal for breakfast and cold cuts for lunch.

At least they know how to set up a tent and cook on a campfire, unlike a certain couple front page writers...

Why

We didn’t destroy the environment to sleep in the environment.

Apparently, it builds “character”. Best part, is we’re not getting to the camp site til well after dark. So setting up should be fun. I’m just going to build a big ass fire and try to stay warm.

Sounds like it just builds resentment

I’ve been camping for 7 of the last 9 nights during my drive across the country. It’s just so cheap and SOOOO much nicer than cheap motels. Plus I get immediate access to nature in the morning. Yeah its been floating around the 30s almost every night in the mountains, but I’ve just dressed well for it. My sleeping pad and 20 degree sleeping bag make me pretty toasty when I layer up.

And this is all on my own with minimal planning where I’ll end up each night. I’ve had some experience packing everything I need in a Miata though so honestly it’s easy.

The way that boyscouts camp might as well be called glamping generally. Last time I went with a troop they had a full kitchen. Idk how they hell they convinced all those people to carry all of that shit. But it was glorious to have a full oven, deep fryer, and then make a whole turkey in a garbage can.

Nope, camping officially finished here, I had to spend an hour lowing my yard tonight, and as I called it yesterday. People are flying by on their snowmobiles.

It varies from troop to troop. My troop was (and to my knowledge still is) basic proper no frills camping. Tents, cots, sleeping bags, and a campfire made of whatever wood they scavenged during the day. Standard cooking mess kit for pots/pans to cook beans/soup/whatever and lots of hot dogs on sticks

As long this campsite doesn’t have a candy shop within close distance, I think you would be ok. (context, I was at a Boy Scout camp years ago where many kids got super dehydrated and sick after discovering freedoms involving attaining candy and soda.)

The way it should be done.

Tins of baked beans and sausages in a pan over a fire.

Easy way to make baked potatoes, make a small fire in a small pit, wrap some potatoes in foil, put some stones on top of the fire and let it burn out, add the potatoes, then throw some soil on top to insulate and an hour or so later you’ve got fantastic baked potatoes to serve with plenty of butter and baked beans. Full of fibre and full of protein.

I’m pretty sure the trading post is closed for the season. The camp at this time of year probably has just a ranger/manager and a few maintenance people on staff.

Shit, I ain’t eating like a savage haha. I love my real campfire meals with actual meat and tasty options!

Kinja'd!!!

But yeah I know I learned about tinfoil surprise and hobo stew from boy scouts. Those are some amazing meals that are quite simple to make with a campfire. A bit more prep to make those work but it’s easy to feed 20-30 people with enough supplies and a big fire.

I have cub scouts so the adults still handle the menu. Pasta is de rigueur as it’s 1. super easy, and 2. you can serve it with basically anything.

one night it’s mac and cheese, the next it’s the meat sauce I made at home and sealed over the pasta. Usually keeps the clowns pretty happy. make a few baked apple concoctions in the fire and the adults are then happy too.

One camp we go to has tents set-up and cots out for us when we arrive, another is simply wooden palettes that we can throw our tents on.

I prefer the ones that are solid ground as i often go camping with my whole family and need the 5-person tent for it. most BSA sites don’t have space for tents over 8'x8' which is too small for us, and we look like jerks when we use two tents for one family “Hey, why don’t the PBJoes share a tent? Is their marriage ok?”

Enjoy.
