My very technical diagram below:

Kinja'd!!!

basically a gold Porsche Cayenne went full sideways through the corner coming right at me. I locked up to full ABS mode and was able to come to a complete stop and we were about 10 feet apart when he came to a stop. I could see the whites of his eyes.

I was going about 15 and it took me about 25-30 feet to stop by my skid marks.

I’m guessing he was going a bit fast and was relying on fancy all wheel drive. I was unable to verify if the parch had snow tires too, that would also explain the long slide towards my poor Mazda.

Did I miss part of the story? Why is there a “dead people” label? What aren’t you telling us?!

Full marks for the diagram

I never get tired of saying this, but all the AWD in the world won’t help you turn or stop on snow and ice. Snow tires for all!!! (And slow the f down on your sporty cayenne summer tires!)

Yep. I’d say there is an 80% chance that cayenne was on some Z rated perellies.

I would be devestated if my mazda 3 was totaled. There aren’t many rust free 11 year old Mazda 3's out there with 70k on the odo.

I mean, how many rust free Mazda 3s are out there to begin with?

My car lived in California until 2012 so it’s only had 5 winters to start decomposing.

It seems that most winter tires have higher sidewalls, so anyone running rubber bands is, at best, on all-seasons.

They actually make very low profile winter tires:

You can definitely get snow tires in some pretty aggressive sizes, they make them to match the OEM sizes for most vehicles. That said, it’s much better overall to have a smaller rim and more sidewall to absorb potholes and whatnot, so if you can fit a smaller rim over the brakes and are getting a second set of wheels for your snows, the sidewall is helpful.

Well thanks, had no idea - many cars in Ontario in winter don’t bother with fancyness, and seem to just run black steelies on snow tires with thick sidewalls.  I’d always thought of cars using the OEM wheels for the trim level would be on all-seasons since many ordinary people seem not to bother with sourcing another set of OEMs - glad to learn.

The cars I have experience with all have decent sidewalls, so I’m not looking forwards to buying new in the future - that, and all the touchscreens.
