Kinja'd!!!

Pretty sure I nailed the timing on that one.

Kinja'd!!!

Having driven the car home in the middle of December with a good amount of snow on the ground on the stock summer tires, I can say conclusively that [awd + 240tw summer tires] < [fwd + all seasons] <<<< [awd + winters], so I wasn’t gonna play that game again with a storm rolling in.

We’ll see what kind of accumulation we have by the morning.

Awesome! I usually mis-time the swap. Two years ago I put my summer tires on at the end of March, only to have a massive storm April 2nd or something, that sucked! Michelin pilot Supersports really, really, REALLY SUCK in the snow!

The snow must be worse down your way. It maybe snowed for a few hours up my way, then stopped.

Hah, I can sympathize. Not being able to drive up a gently sloped driveway in your fancy new all wheel drive car because the tires have turned hard as hockey pucks and have effectively no tread is a bit emberassing.

I switched mine a tad early this spring as well actually and had snow a couple of days later. That left the car parked for 2 days while I biked to work and borrowed my dad’s truck to drive. :)

Hero time with a subaru+snow tires.

I put mine on last Tuesday evening, woke to 4" fluff. It’s nice to have a second set of wheels.

Seriously, awd + snow tires just feels like cheating. It will accelerate almost as hard on packed snow as it will on dry pavement.

It takes some effort to keep from being overconfident but it’s a lot of fun. I highly recommend getting one to anyone who can.

It’s funny, the weather network only forecasts 1-2cm or so but has a warning for bands of lake effect in my area that could give us up to 15cm. I’m hoping for the latter but we’ll see.

WRX is at the top of my list for next cars. I have a 2013 outback with the 6 speed MT, with the blizzaks it is like a tank on the shitty roads. The other thing I notice is the stability control is rather intrusive if you try to rally drive, so I have to remember to turn it off if I want to oppo.

Yep, it doesn’t like to let the back end step out and as I drive on gravel every day I turn mine off frequently.

I glanced at that pic and first thought, “that is a huge hood scoop!”, then realized it was the pickup behind...

What kind of splash guards you running there?

They’re Rallyarmor mudflaps - very popular for Subarus. Expensive for what they are but the bracketry and hardware is well designed and the flaps do a good job mimizing the gravel/salt/etc that hits the bottom of the car.

I did this last year with my Miata. Autocross one day and then building a snow man the next day! So I had to swap out the summer tires in the dark overnight as the cold rain started to fall when I got home. Thankfully it was still warm enough out that the snow didnt begin until later in the night. But oh man was I sketched out on that hour and a half drive home from the autocross!
