The “after the jump” portion is incorrect due to the formating of the article and the fact the video is before the jump. The video the mod placed to create the jump is of a Roots supercharger which makes a characteristic whining noise under load which is known as Root Whine. The text of the edit has nothing to do with the political content being moved past the jump to match standard Oppo politics posting procedure. yamahog is correct in her statement that the supercharger in the video is in fact whiny.

I did that, and I have no regrets. I asked them to edit it for after the jump per our policy and it sat there unchanged for long enough for me to make a determination to change it. Root whine was just a funny happenstance as I was trying to figure out a good safety image. it was root whine, not saying that we dont have a right to whine about stuff, I do it, you do, but its still whining. These types of post are borderline shitpost (the bad kind) and we considered just canning it, but it was decided that its important to be able to vent and rant and whine from time to time, you just have to follow the rules. After the jump with a safety image. root rant wasn’t nearly as funny and there was no good safety image for it. how much professionalism do you want in your free, volunteer operated off topic car themed shitpost blog?

The post stayed because its an important vent. The edit was made because he was asked to comply with the rules which says that politically sensitive topics be below the jump with a warning...and he didn’t comply. This isn’t about content. Root whine, as explained, was just a funny way to use root and a roots whine video in the edit so that the content was after the jump per policy.

As for “after the jump” it means that if you want to say something you think will be contentious, we don’t discourage you from doing it (just watch yourself in the comments) but we ask that:
1. The title contain some message that indicated that beyond here be dragons.
2. That there is a lead safety image that appears that is unrelated to the topic.

I’m not disagreeing that the original post was a bit vent-y . It’s just that you’re basically an official here and by making edits that favor or dismiss posts it makes a statement saying that only certain types of content are permitted. That is the exact opposite of what Oppo is for. We don’t want this forum turning into yet another echo chamber like so many other kinja blogs are. The post was a valid post. Racism, sexism, ageism, against abilities or religion is wrong which ever way it’s directed.
Just because it’s directed at white people doesn’t make it any less racist or devisive and actually encourages discourse against the people your trying to not be racist towards you.

I mean I’ve always recognized certain recurring behavior (hour rule, after the jump, buffer image, etc) but never realized that those were official rules. I thought it was just us following somebody else’s lead and it became an unwritten Code of Oppo.

I never expected this to turn into the shitstorm it did. I understand at least half of it was kickback against mods and a perceived lack of impartiality due to a poorly understood (but good) joke.

I don’t know, but the complaints seems to have worked - I see far less cross posting from Jezebel anymore. I’ve got to believe they have some level of control over what shows up as “recommended” and can do the analytics to see what makes people stop coming back.
I get it - they don’t have enough of their own traffic so they have to piggy-back off Jalopnik’s traffic. But when that piggy backing causes Jalopnik to lose more traffic than it increases for Jezebel or The Root, that’s a bad decision.
Also, I saw that story disappeared from the “recommended stories” within an hour. I don’t think that was an accident, either.
