Why not a Suburban? I guess its still more versatile because you can remove the cap...and its got a hose down cargo area. Maybe its just that they look horrible.

I guess the Baja confuses me more though, I mean...its just an outback. Its an outback, just buy an outback!

The Baja makes a lot more sense if you don’t put a cap on it.

Works well for those of us in snowy states, beats a bed full of snow that becomes semi-useless.

I mean...if you had an outback you would put them on the roof and still have room in the back for your stuff.

Yeah, the ridgies new “truck” look really helps with the shell. The avalanche is strange because people bought it over a regular truck because of the midgate, if you just wanted a truck with a shell a Silverado works bette.r

so buy a wagon?

Good luck making that argument in the midwest. Just saying, you see far more people run shells in the winter and take them off for spring, summer and fall around here.

But why an avalanche? I get that for a Silverado, but if you need a wagon, just buy the wagon?

I really, really like the idea of the midgate. I think all trucks with an integrated body-bed should have that as part of the design.

That said, I wonder how many people ever actually used that feature. I have maaaaaaaybe seen the rear glass removed on an Avalanche once, and that was right after they came out.

You could also put the bikes on the roof of the Baja. It’s like a UTE where you get a truck bed for big/dirty things but it still feels like a car day to day.

No one used it after their first year of ownership because it wasn’t all that useful, unfortunately it also comes with huge compromises like the flying buttresses in a BOF and a tiny tunnel on unibodies. It just doesn’t practically work.

I’m relieved to know I’ve never seen a shell on either of these.

I’m terrified to know a shell exists for both of these.

But ultimately, I’m a 2-box guy. That is, a wagon beats a ute, an SUV beats a pickup. But if I had to haul concrete, sod, manure, etc, I’d change my tune.

Its one of those things that sounds really good on paper, all that versatility! but then in reality you realize its just kinda good at many things but not great at anything.

Because you can always remove a cap for if you need to haul something large.

Because you can’t hose out the cargo area of a Suburban.

Because you don’t want the dog throwing up inside the car, but you don’t want him jumping out either.

Because you’re afraid of your tools being stolen but you don’t want to rip up the carpet in the back of an SUV.

Because you were annoyed with how difficult it was to remove mulch particles from carpet.

And be honest, a cap makes a lot more sense in terms of usability than a hard tonneau cover.

But the bikes in the bed mean you can still take it through a drive thru.

Plus there’s still plenty of room back there for stuff.

The 8 foot/ 6 foot bed in the Avalanche is very useful. Also it’s a better place to put a dead deer, wood, mulch, etc.

My neighbor just sold a Baja XT with a canopy, $9,000 with 90,000 miles.

I guess I’d rather an avalanche because you can still put 3 people in the back seat. My mom’s boyfriend has one and it is very useful for hauling people and gear you wouldn’t necessarily want to put inside of a Tahoe.

It still doesn’t make sinse given a 1500 4 door with a 6' bed is infinitely more useful.

Except it is still a truck, just with a covered cargo area. You can use it like a truck, carry stuff you’d never stick in the back of an SUV, but you also don’t need to worry about it blowing out on the highway or getting stolen in a parking lot.

I can think of a couple reasons. For instance, say you’re hauling lawnmowers, or other items that tend to smell. Better they’re in an area separate from the passenger compartment. Add a topper to keep them locked/dry. Granted this is a very specific advantage, but it still makes way more sense than the more common “I need the biggest SUV I can find so I can tow my boat when I finally get it” reasoning a lot of SUV buyers use.

thats the gist of it, there are simpler solutions to the problems these trucks attempt to solve than dealing with a vehicle so strangely compromised.

Thats the worst bit, you get a tiny bed, for trading off being able to haul long things and sleep in comfort. Nuts to that.

Because open truck beds are useless for plenty of folks, yet there are still plenty of things they don’t want to share an interior compartment with.

For me to do a race weekend, I need a place for all the stuff where light things don’t fly out at 80mph, doesn’t get wet when it rains and is at least slightly less likely to grow legs and walk away in a hotel parking lot overnight, but I also don’t want to spend quality, aromatic time with things like fuel jugs and sets of race tires.

At one point years back, I actually considered an avalanche. I just couldn’t get past the mass of unpainted cladding, but the appeal was that for awhile they presented a better bargain on the used market at the time when everyone and their mother was just starting to want crew cab 1/2 ton trucks and they were still relatively uncommon to find not brand new.

11/10/2017 at 14:23, STARS: 0

I buy your argument. but what you are describing is called a “pickup with a cap”. There is no reason to buy a convertable pickup like the avalanche and cap it over either buying a regular pick and cap or just a wagon.

11/10/2017 at 19:19, STARS: 0

An avalanche is just that: A 1/2- ton pickup with a cap. It also happens to have a weird back glass. I agree that buying one new later on the model run to put a shell on would be redundant, but think back to the early 2000's 1/2 ton truck market. I was driving and buying new (or newer) trucks at the time. Half tons with full crew cabs were just beginning to become a thing, and they weren’t terribly common. In the beginning, GM and Dodge 1/2 ton’s with full-size crew cabs were only available in heavy-half ton type payload configurations, they both weren’t overly common on dealer lots and holy hell were they marked up to ridiculous numbers. In 2002, if you wanted a GM half-ton crew cab that wasn’t the 1500HD model and you didn’t need the 6.0, I recall the avalanche being the only choice. Going out to the mid 2000's, everyone and mother began to want one, and used prices reflected that. Back in 2006ish, the cheapest way into a half-ton crew cab was a used avalanche that few people wanted due to the ugly cladding. Had I bought one at that time, it would’ve gotten a shell put on it.
