Since nobody threw themselves in front of the gun and stopped me last night-I pulled the trigger and bought the BMW i3. I paid 19,300. It has the range extender, DC fast charging, Giga, Electronic Package, Tech and Driving Package, Harman Kardon and of course that gorgeous eucalyptus dash.

Mmmm, dat dash...

I couldn’t stand the exposed insulation on the tops of the doors. Nor the goofy dip for the rear door windows. If I were given one I’d pull a Volt and put black appliques below the side glass to mask that silly dip.

I don’t mind the dip. The exposed insulation isn’t my favorite, but it is a nice place to be. I’m thinking about body match vinyl wrapping the hood. I saw a couple and it makes the details on the car pop that much more.

Used? How many miles? Seems like you got a heck of a deal.

It has 20k miles. I believe Kbb is high, but they say average list at 26k. I would say I got a pretty good deal, I’m guessing it should have been listed for around 22.5 to 23k.

I love the weirdness of these. I also love the greenhouse in the front, but how is visibility out the back?

Very nice.

Is there a way around the weird limit on the range extender?

I bought a $10 cable that allows me to increase the gas tank size (yes kinda really) and I can control when the REX comes on.

I hear that there was an update from the earlier version that would cut power when the REX was on.

Visibility is pretty good all the way around. Weirdly, you can’t really see out the front, you have to just trust That the front end isn’t that long. The space between the windshield and dash is like twin mattress sized! Back it is pretty good. We have the parking sensors and backup camera and it makes it super easy to locate obstacles.

Compare these 70-sereries tires to the tires on your new Beamer.

Good! That was probably the biggest ‘quirk’ for the i3. BMW’s weird rule enforcement.

Yes, it’s done quite easily. You just have to restore it to rest of the world spec by modifying the software.

Yep, good ol wifi OBD2 + Bimmercode app.

Reprogramming your car from your phone feels so fucking future.

Nice! I’ve had mine since July. Still totally in love. Especially after putting a 220V plug in the garage.

Oh and btw, white i3's tend to be known as “Storm Troopers” in the i3 community, my brothers (well his wife’s) is white and their kids love referring to it as such!

Ah! I spent $30 on Carly for my 335 and it doesn’t support the i3. Thanks for the tip. I really didn’t want to break out the POS netbook to get a windows machine.

Ohhhh. Pretty pics!

So, I found a 110 and a 220v charger in the trunk of mine. It is the bmw 3.6 amp one though, I think. I may upgrade to a 7 amp in the future. But it was a welcome sight.

20k Miles. I replied to somebody else about all that went into it. And I forgot about the $400 level 2 charger in the trunk. . I’m extremely happy with how much I paid and what I got.

Oh no! Are you talking about the REX flap? I live in Texas, I had to have a range extender. It is 200 miles to the closest town

Bimmercode does everything in advanced mode, but I know there are a few settings that require multiple value changes that aren’t made automatically in easy mode. Not a big deal, but it’s kept me from changing the locking behavior to unlock both doors and trunk (which is like my #1 annoyance about the car). But reprogramming the manual charge state hold and programming one of the dash buttons to do it was easy. This is the OBD2 reader I got, works like a charm.

Thanks! Can’t beat old glass and a sunny evening for nice pics.

Nice that they left you the 220 charger, I only got the little “occasional use” BMW one, which was fine until I got around to installing the 220 plug in the garage.

Color-matched hood is a neat idea. The only benefit I see from the black is lack of reflectance from light sources, otherwise...

I assumed in most places in US the REX is going to be needed, my sister in law’s is a REX as well as they live out in the countryside in North Wales, though they are finding that since they got it there are more and more public chargers popping up everywhere. We have only public charged ours a couple of times, but we live on the edge of Manchester and most places we go are in reach, my brothers would need a public charge to get there and back but as they have a charger at theirs I can just plug in when I get there (or just take our petrol Seat Leon, though I do like taking the i3!).

That’s what I think will convince a lot of people to EV’s, the effortlessness in driving them, for running around town and the like they can’t be beaten.

I also have a 335 for long trips if needed. The trip I take most often, between Austin and Houston, only has Tesla superchargers on the route. It is pretty annoying.

Much worse cars to do the trip in though, a 335i is a nice car!
