Kinja'd!!!

I got tired of scrubbing the stains out of the toilet so I tried this stuff. Best $10 I ever spent. Last time I did serious cleaning I was using scouring pads and sandpaper, and it took like half an hour to get the toilet clean. With this stuff you pour it in, let it sit, and then come back later and brush everything clean.

Of course, being a typical man I didn’t bother reading the directions. I poured some in and then went to work. The directions say to leave it for 5 minutes. Oops. It also worked great on the stains in the bathtub, something the instructions say not to do. Double oops. The metal drain looked like new, cleaner than I’ve ever seen it, but not surprisingly the instructions say to keep it off metal fixtures - triple oops. But whatever - everything is nice and clean and looks great (and smells minty fresh), and at this point I wouldn’t hesitate to use it the same way in the future.

That and “The Works” are really great products. Especially if you have hard water. (any acid based cleaner really.)

There is good reason for the warning about metal fixtures though. Trim and cover plates are cheap compared to an hour or more of scrubbing though.

Zep makes some good stuff. I’ve never seen toilets stain as quickly as in my own house (which I suspect has some other water issues, but home ownership means prioritizing, and hard water isn’t as high on the list as a flooding basement, for example), and I’ve had good luck woth the various toilet bowl cleaners with the semi-useless spout on them. The current one is Clorox-branded and does quite well, and a quick whirl of the toilet brush and it’s like-new.

Ah yes, nothing gets your bathroom cleaner than literal hydrochloric acid.

One of my very first jobs was in custodial work, and I remember we used a product called “Pinky”. I don’t know if it was ever made available to the public, or if it even exists anymore, but what you got sounds very much like it.

We used a fluffy scrub brush to push most of the water down out of the bowl, then applied the Pinky (a bright pink liquid in a squeezable quart container) all around the top of the bowl, running down. Gently scrub it away after a minute or two of sitting, and bam- the toilet looks like new, and smells like peppermint.
