Found a 2001 E38 740il for sale locally. I’m looking at picking up another flip car to provide some holiday bucks, but could use some wisdom.

136,000 miles, black over tan. mid-range in options.

Interior is clean, everything works, busted LCD screen on cluster, busted cupholders. I can easily make the interior 9/10, it’s maybe 7/10 right now.

Body also pretty good, but has some rust on bottom rear corner of all doors. Also quarter-size bubble in right rear fender above tire. I live in Ohio. Underbody is pretty clean from what I could crawl under to see.

Mechanically, rough. Definitely needs valve gaskets, power steering hoses, diff seals, front brakes. PS pump also suspect. Runs fine, leaks are not bad, not good. Newer radiator and W/P with paperwork for that.

Runs, rides and drives fine. The guy won’t budge from $2300, I’m trying to get a 20-25% margin on resale. Is it feasible (barring unforseen calamity)?

Nope. Yes its a great car. No you will not make money. Or maybe you can make a couple hundred, but how many people do you think troll Craigslist for 740s? Not many. And those who do are probably mechanically inclined enough to spend less for an example that needs work.

You will either sit on it much longer than intended, end up keeping it, or lose money.

nope, they’re nice cars but aren’t worth much to begin with now and will have 94467 electrical gremlins that will play whack a mole as you fix them
