My 4 year old just invented snow tires

We might have a slow leak in one our tires on the truck, so I was telling my wife at dinner we might need new tires (they’re mismatched budget tires, I’m looking for any excuse, really). My 4yo daughter chimes in and says it might snow soon, we should get snow tires. I looked up at my wife and she saw the look of surprise on my face, and we asked each other if the other person had told her about them. None of our cars have them, we live in Virginia, so it’s not like she’d know from us unless we explicitly told her. Is her day care covering car maintenance? Did she just come up with idea to make tires for snow all on her own? Is my daughter a mechanic in training?

Great! Now she’s going to judge me for using all seasons instead of dedicated summer and winters.

Honestly I’ve never bothered with them as a life long VA resident, mostly because everything shuts down when snow arrives. Not that that is a bad thing with all the people around here that have no idea how to drive in the slushy stuff.

Exactly. Even when I was autocrossing and had two sets, I had autocross and all seasons, rather than high performance summer and winter sets.

I keep a set of chains, because I figure at 1/10th the cost, and able to keep them with the vehicle, if I really need them they’ll be worth way more than snow tires. Then again, I grew up in an area where the freeways would close to anyone without them.

Sometimes the universe gives you signs. GET the snow tires!

It is okay. I live in PA. I don’t think you could run all seasons here because it will snow at least once in April. I would need to run winters into March, all-seasons through May, summers through Sept, and then back to winters, that is to much tire changing.

The wife is saying the same thing...

Growing up in NY the school buses would use chains. Haven’t seen them in a car in decades

She’d love that. I’d be creating a monster. She already has to be first for everything.

You already created the monster, now you just need to point her at the other kids and watch her crush them..

Are you sure she didn’t mean you should make tires out of snow? That’d be much more 4 year old like thinking and much more exciting as well.

They are illegal in a lot of places. I know they are in Michigan and Illinois. Which is good given how poorly people treat their cars. I can just imagine being pelted with chains as other drivers improperly secured chains come flying off at speed

If it’s bad enough that I need to use them, feel free to stop me. Chains aren’t for clear pavement nor speeds over about 30MPH. I don’t have them to do a trip to the store or anything like that, but to get my keyster home and safe. The roads are rarely snowed up more than a day at a time.

By all means go right ahead. I just have no confidence in the drivers of southeast Michigan to use them with any sense. Some of the cars on my morning commute look like the survivors of a demolition derby.

Yep, falls into spirit of the law vs letter of the law. We’ve seen people chain up on dry pavement 20 miles before chain controls start, that just tears the hell out of everything including the pavement. People chain up the rears on the FWD car, chain up the fronts on a RWD car and doing 60MPH until they spin across three lanes of traffic and end up in a hill. A guy I went to school with kept one set of chains and one set of V-bars for his Toyota pickup (80's back in the 90's) that were super illegal. His reasoning was that if he had to chain up all four, legality be damned, a cop would need a snow cat to pull him over.

Example of conditions he was referring to:

I remember that. I was driving a Dodge Neon with shitty all season tires and failed rear brakes to work the next day because my company said “if the building is habitable you are expected to be at work or use your vacation days”. I had 5 days vacation and had used them all to go to friends weddings so I went in. Sketchy as hell. Still that isn’t normal. That is like 1 big snowstorm every few years
