Many of the positions on the extremes of both sides are absurd. Both mental healthcare and common sense gun restrictions (like on AR-15 functionality, large quantity magazines, waiting periods, thorough background checks for even minor domestic abuse or assault charges, etc) are important. But primarily I do believe that America has a gun addiction. We like our guns too much, and we have too many of them, and it is too easy for us to get them, and too many of us fetishise them. As someone who was trained, that fetishism scares the hell out of me.

I am anti-gun, but pro -2nd Amendment as long as it is part of the Constitution. The thing about constitutionalism is that you don’t get to ignore the parts you don’t like, you have to protect them so you can protect the parts you do like. And there’s a process to change the Constitution and we should do that, and it’s my job to convince enough Americans that we should do that.

I learned to shoot in the US Navy. My Marine gunnery sergeant taught me in his primary lecture before he even let us LOOK at live firearms, that guns as they exist now were created, refined, and perfected for one primary purpose: killing people. They are killing machines. Every other possible use for them is a secondary purpose to this. I knew then I’d carry and discharge a weapon in the line of duty, but I would never, ever, ever choose to own one.

Thanks for the well written response. Not a lot of places that things like that happen.

It’s hard for me to argue with you because I respect everything you wrote and thank you for your service. I will admit I am one who does love guns. I love them for shooting targets, clay, and hunting. I don’t love them for their destructive tendencies towards other people though. It does frustrate me as someone that loves them for their legitimate use but because of what others use them for I feel the need to also have them to protect me and my family.

On a side note, it also frustrates me how little is known about guns by those who want to ban them. These people are at war with guns. The first rule of war is know your enemy. These people still think AR stands for “Assault Rifle” and couldn’t safely operate one if given a lecture on it. I’ve even seen this with my little sister. Staunch liberal who opposes guns but if I try to teach her anything about my gun, the fun uses, or the safe use of a gun she shuts me down and says she doesn’t even want to see one.

My conclusion is everyone is dumb(except those that are not).

I still remember when the Australian Army got hold of their .223 Steyr rifles to replace the old .308 M-16 (?).

The Steyr’s have a scope built in where as the old ones were open sights. The scope sight didn’t have a cross hair rather it has a circle. I asked the gunnery dude ‘Why the circle?’ and his response...”The intention of these things is to disable the enemy, not necessarily kill them. Disabling combatants creates more headaches for the enemy than killing them outright. To disable someone with this firearm, place the circle over their body and fire repeatedly.”.

As someone who aimed for a humane kill when hunting and who respected accuracy and efficiency as the highest of firearm skills...a firearm designed primarily to maim made me a bit squeamish.

On the other hand, I haven’t heard anybody put up a convincing argument (your last election aside) that America has more crazy people per capita than anywhere else, or that your mental health system is dramatically worse. But you do have about 3x the gun ownership rate and about 3x the gun death rate of any other developed country. That sort of correlation looks to the rest of the world like a pretty strong case for easy access to guns being at least part of the problem.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimated_number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country

Putting it on mental health while ignoring that is like saying “I crashed because I took that bend too fast” while ignoring the fact that one of your shocks is leaking, your steering rack’s flogged out, and your ESC warning light’s been on for a year. Excessive speed may be the root cause, but there were ways to mitigate the effects.

Or, as the Onion has started putting it every time this happens , “No Way to Prevent This, Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens”

None of which, by the way, justifies the media going into a clickbait “BDSM gun porn” frenzy every time this happens. On that, I’m with Under_Score.

Not so much designed to maim, but designed to kill (when wearing body armor)

m-16 uses a .223. the predecessor was proabably a .308 (7.62) (m-14 or g3) as those were used by all nato countries in the 50s-70s.

The .223 is smaller mass higher velocity, enabeling a soldier to fire more rounds accurately down range, increasing the chance of hitting a target. due to the smaller area and higher velocity the .223 has the better penetration of early body armor. An issue a number in the army ran into iraq and afghanistan is that few combatants were wearing 80's soviet body armor, and often rounds went through “cleanly” vs exploding tissue. the result was many more maims vs outright kills. My cousin was talking how some units were requesting more older style rifles m-14 as there were cases of suicide bombers getting hit and kept charging.

That link shows suicides BY GUN. The US’s OVERALL suicide rate is on the high side but not noticeably worse than France or New Zealand, which both have much less public access to firearms and much lower “suicide by firearm” rates. All you’re seeing there is that someone who wants to kill themselves is more likely to use a gun if they have easy access to one, which isn’t a big surprise.

Having said that, I’d bet easy gun access IS a contributor to the US’s suicide rate. Firstly because suicide can be an impulse thing, and guns are easy. If you don’t have access to one you may talk yourself out of it by the time you figure out how to do it. Secondly because a lot of suicide attempts are more a cry for help than a determined attempt to die, and shooting yourself is much more likely to work than pills or cutting. I’d be interested to see if the US’s “failed suicide attempt” rate is lower than other countries.

Dangerous and violent felons somehow keep LEGALLY getting ahold of them. That’s often the problem. Many of these mass shooters had legal access or were not subjected to rigorous oversight that should have prevented them from obtaining the weapons in question.

I’m far more frightened of a gun fetishist with a history of domestic abuse than I am frightened of an ex-con who spent 20 years in jail on drug convictions.
