DAY 7 - Shores Lake Campground, AR to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, TX
I have made it a week on the road and 2800 miles. This stop was at Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo, Texas. I stayed there based on the suggestion by my airbnb host in Memphis. So I had no idea what to expect but boy was it a great choice! It was a little bit cold in the morning and it rained overnight but I was well prepared for it and the sights were amazing to take in! Plus I got in a nice 8 mile hike and had some great camp food. Picture dump below!
Overall it was a great stopover and now I’m on my way to new Mexico for another night of camping. I plan to stay at Monzano mountains State park and will be arriving there around 6-630 tonight. Short drive and then a longer drive into the Phoenix area the next day. Then just one more day of travel to California! I’m kind of sad the trip is winding down but I’m excited for the new adventure to start in California.

Looks like fun. You don’t have a lantern? That light will do, but not much beats a good camping lantern for meals and work.

I hate excessive light at night while camping. 90% of the time I just use my headlamp on red light mode. That is a work lamp though and is pretty bright!
I doubt my phone captures it well but it provides plenty of light for one person. That plus my various flash lights and headlamps keep things lit. I generally go to sleep very early though while camping. It’s been 9pm each night so far. So that’s only like 3 hours of complete dark where I’m mostly just by the fire anyways.

Plus I don’t have to worry about getting it dirty! It’s SOOOO fucking dirty right now lol. It sure is a conversation starter though with simple midwesterner folk.

Ahh you too found the penis rock! I made the hike down that trail, nice views all around. I see you got a bit closer lol. But yeah that park was the reason why I stopped in Texas. Otherwise I would have done Oklahoma and then straight to NM.

Even better as leftovers today! I was surprised how good the pork chops came out. I figured I would burn the shit out of them but they just have a nice campfire char to them and are nice and juicy inside. My other favorite was the spaghetti and meatballs I made on my camp stove. Otherwise it’s been mostly burgers.
