I wish they’d pick one of the times and just leave it there.

I am in that boat as well. Left Maryland for Las Vegas ( where time of day doesn’t matter anyways) and then am back home in Maryland, This time change on top of jet lag has broken my internal clock

I passionately hate DST. The people that devised it and those that champion it likely have a special level of hell dedicated to them.

Being in tech, it’s a plague. Time zones are archaic and stupid, while DST is actively brain-damaged. If you ever have to deal with building/maintaining a system that works worldwide, providing data in local time zones, displaying time correctly on disparate devices with old tz/dst databases, etc, you’d want to dig your brain out with a spoon. Why would anyone think it was a good idea to screw with time?

I have long advocated for local solar time now that we have the technology to calculate it precisely. You could set it to the center of your nearest city, the city you work in, your home, the center of your state, or whatever works best for you and those around you. It’d be glorious.

So far I am loving it! Go to bed early cause its dark and am waking up at 6 without an alarm, wide awake. I know from experience that this will only last a week more or so, but for now I love it.

When I got back from Afghanistan after 9 months I would wake up at 430 am every morning bright eyed and ready to go for the day. I got extra reading and workouts in, it was awesome. Then a month went by and it was back to the snooze button.

This last week I help a buddy moved to Florida from South Dakota, so on Friday I crossed a time zone, on Saturday daylight savings time kicked in, and on Sunday I flew back, once again crossing a time zone. I barely know what day it is.

DST needs to be abolished. Seriously. Let businesses adopt summer and winter hours if so desired. Some already do.

I’m one who wants DST all year... I’d much rather go to work in the dark and have an hour of light after I get home.

My wife acts like it’s a big deal to adjust to it, the only things I notice about the switch are I have to reset the clocks and then it’s dark out when I leave work at night.

Why do we want it to get dark at 5:30pm again? Everyone is burning lights in their house an extra hour a day now. It’s not bright enough in the morning to leave them off, but I have to turn them on an hour earlier in the evening now. It’s not a big deal to me, but multiply that times 100 Million households.

DST is stupid. But the politicians helped the world by changing the date of it by six weeks a few years back.

The other thing that DST did was completely flummox my mother when she lived in AZ, which doesn’t observe it. She never could figure out if I was one or two hours ahead of her.

While I would love to see DST burn in hell, I’m not sure we could do without time zones (though China seems to do okay with just one). They are too entrenched. I had a friend who flew international cargo jets, and all scheduling was done with GMT. That makes sense for them. I’m not sure it would work so well for your average American.

As my dad always said, what difference does it make if I burn my lights for an extra hour in the morning or the evening? I’m still using them. What I bemoan is the loss of one hour of golden morning sunlight when I want to go take pictures at the airport. I can’t head out until my kids go to school, so I’ve lost a whole hour of gorgeous low angle sun.

I’m the opposite. I can’t do any yard work after 5:30 now. I’d prefer to do a little during the week, instead of all of it on the weekend. Then with my luck it rains 3 weekends in a row, and next thing you know the HOA is sending a letter to bag your leaves.

No one else understands because they pay people to bag theirs.

You don’t need to use UTC, although it’s handy. You just use coordinates and/or GPS. Calculating your exact solar time from your longitude is trivial.

Time zones are a relic of a solution devised by train companies to solve the problem of local time being hard to calculate during the era. Most cities and people used solar time back then. The reason I would like to do away with time zones is that they are a political pawn/football just like DST. The system was designed to correct for inconsistency in time, but since then cities have grown near the lines and politics has moved the boundaries, requiring massive and complex databases to figure out exactly which zone you’re now in. Using pure solar time would fix this as there would be no abrupt changes within ranges that humans now regularly travel.
