License plates for my new car should be arriving in about a week. The PO lived in Arizona and thus didn’t have front plates on the car.

Does anyone live in CA and drive without front plates? If so, how much is the fix it ticket? And if I drive through an area with cops that have nothing better to do, will I get pulled over?

They don’t need a reason to pull you over, but thanks for giving them one!

Here in Ohio we require front plates, and they enforce it heavily.

With that being said, my friend has his SCAT and his front plate is on the dash pressed up against the windshield.

My Talon doesn’t have a front plate either. It’s also on the dash. No issues yet.

I live in CA and have gone without a front plate for at least a year. Half of the time I had it up against the windshield than I got pulled over(because there was a total of 2 ft of exhaust system on the car past the headers) The cops told me to put the plate back on the front and install mufflers, it never led to a ticket. I think its fine but theres a small chance of getting hassled/ticket.

Was doing some research on this today since I just moved to CA. If the DMV issues you two plates your required to mount both. Was really hoping I could ditch my front plate finally.

I live in San Diego, CA and I have never run a front plate on any of my vehicles for many years, and never got a ticket. I believe it’s a fix it ticket, $25 admin fee if you get one.

They were maybe a little more strict about it in the past because camera ticket systems use to only take your front photo, so if you ran without a front plate, they couldn’t I.D. you.

But since switching to front and rear camera ticket systems, not having a front plate won’t save you from these intersection red light cameras.

Funny thing is, a lot of the camera’s, at least in San Diego have been shut off for years because of lawsuits. Either way, I don’t run a front plate because it’s ugly. I’ve been pulled over for speeding a few times, not once did they bother to ticket me for no front plate.

I lived in California for the best part of five years (and two cars) and never mounted a front plate. Being young and foolish, I got a few minor traffic tickets during that time (both local PD and CHP), but the missing front plate never came up. On one car I even had a Seahawks plate instead of a real license plate (hometown pride, y’know) and a Raiders fan cop joked about it. This is where I (truthfully) say that most interactions with law enforcement I’ve had have been very civil and competent.

Then I got pulled over for not having a front plate by a semiliterate county sheriff deputy. He did not end up writing even a fix-it ticket but he and his partner did spend most of an hour repeatedly accusing me of stealing the car he had just verified as registered and insured in my name, demanding to search it for no reason, and pointing guns at compliant-but-confused passengers. At the end of it I was sincerely relieved they didn’t shoot anybody, including their own feet. They apparently did not notice that my tabs were expired.

The bottom line is that it will probably never come up but if it does it may suck a lot. Your mileage will obviously vary, but since then, I have always* mounted a front plate.

* Mostly.

Been issued 2 plates on multiple cars, but never had it on from 1999-2015 in CA, both North and south. Never been pulled over or ticketed for it. 2015-now, I live in Seattle and same thing

If you don’t want to damage the front of your car with a plate, look to see if there are any tow-hook mounted plate holders. Did that for my previous car (BMW 535) and I liked the look of it better too. All my other cars (I’m in NY) have already had the front plate mounted, so there was no point in not having it on.

Can’t you get away with driving with no plate at all in Cali?

They’re freaks about it in MN. They’ll even try to ticket a car with classic plates on it, despite the law clearly stating classic cars only need one plate.
