Kinja'd!!!

Windows Media Center seemed to be working OK, but ran out of space. I redirected it to save to another drive, one that won’t frequently be filling up to capacity, and as a result it didn’t move my existing recorded programs but appears to have deleted them. WTF?

Just when I thought MS might have gotten their collective act together on something I find remnants of the old “eh, good enough” mentality that kept me away from their products for years.

Oh, and of course the missing files aren’t in the trash...

I mean. With all the great media programs why would you use media center?

Any recommendations? WMC was there and worked with the tuner with a minimum of configuration, so I ran it even though I know it’s crap. I had Kodi but didn’t have the patience to figure out which modules I needed to do the various tasks. It felt a lot like Linux - lots of potential, but not a lot of good documentation on how to get it running and a user community that looks askance at you if you’re such a n00b that you can’t figure it out on your own. Although it may not seem like it at times, I do have a life outside of these boxes.

Yeah I was gonna say Kodi. Plex isn’t bad either.

VLC is my preferred media player. You should be able to see all your media files already saved through the library so you don’t have to add them twice.

I do use VLC for playback despite the lousy audio codecs but I need something to schedule and record OTA TV content. I prefer not to use MS software whenever possible but WMC was there and worked. I didn’t realize until after the fact that it has some seriously stupid design choices like I just encountered.
